There was money there to spend
Lived life with sweet abandon
Never thinking it would end.
Our houses got more splendid
While our cities grew and grew—
Our credit was extended
And the government’s was too.
The fat-cats getting fatter
Played a game they couldn’t lose,
Discretion didn’t matter
It was our wealth they would use.
Investments became playthings,
Borrowed money ruled the roost
The banks increased their takings—
The economy was ‘goosed’.
The crash came unexpected
On a simpleton like me—
I thought I was protected
By the ‘lords of treasury’.
And then there came the bail-outs
But I couldn’t understand—
Seemed that they were helping out
Those who caused the whole ‘shebang’.
I’m not great on high finance,
That I freely will declare—
This question I advance—
Do their ‘lordships’ think it’s fair?
The small guy needs assistance
Much much more than fat-cats do—
Government benevolence
Is so badly managed too.
