“What, dear?” I forced a smile for Aaron’s sake, as I fought inner panic over the state of my hair.
“There were two blue moons in 1999, and the second one was on my birthday!” His latest craze was astronomy. “There’s gonna be one tonight, too.”
“That’s great, sweetie. Must mean you’re special or something.” I winked at him, then turned back to the mirror.
“Yeah, they’re really rare. There won’t even be one next year at all.” Aaron leaned closer, watching closely as I tangled with the curling iron’s cord.
Rare. Like a date, in my life. I hadn’t had a date in over a year, and tonight’s prospect, although he had plenty of promise, might just be my last chance for a while. Over thirty, and in school for most of his life, he hadn’t yet married. At least he didn’t seem to mind seeing a single mom. Now if I could only handle my unruly tresses….
Aaron picked up my makeup bag and poked through the contents. “How come you don’t do this all the time, Mom?”
I bit back laughter. “Because I’m pretty busy, honey. Between work and taking care of you two, I don’t have much time for special nights away.” Not to mention, it’s awfully difficult to even obtain a date - “Oh, yes, and my two kids are wonderful,” usually loses their interest as fast as they find it.
He wrinkled his nose. “Is Chelsea really going to be in charge?”
My teenage daughter had practically begged me to let her watch her brother, rather than their aunt, who had always watched them before. “Yes. Although I expect you to just be good and take care of yourself. I don’t want to hear about any fighting when I get home.”
“Are you going to kiss the guy tonight?” His innocently slipped in question almost caught me off guard.
God, I hope so! Five years of widowhood, and the desperation grew with each new prospect. “We’ll see. He has to like me, you know, before there’s any kissing.”
“I don’t know why he wouldn’t. You’re so pretty.”

With Aaron’s praise ringing in my ears, I sneaked a peek at Bill, who seemed equally entranced by my looks, at least for the moment. He leaned closer. The wind tossed my artificially curled hair, and I inwardly gave thanks for mega-hold hair spray. A twilight ferry ride provided quite the romantic date, although the cold November wind slightly toned down the enthusiasm.
“It’s a blue moon tonight.” I broke the silence with (I hoped) an interesting fact.
“Really? It looks yellow to me.” He grinned.
I like a sense of humor. I smiled in return. “I guess there won’t be another one for over a year.”
“Guess that makes this night special, then, eh?”
I stared up into brilliant blue eyes. “Guess so.” A silence followed, as he gazed back.
“I really want to kiss you right now,” he stated bluntly.
Unable to contain my mirth, I giggled out loud. “So why don’t you?”
“I’ve always told God I would wait.” He shrugged his shoulders. “I want my first kiss to be with the right person.”
I knew he hadn’t ever dated, but kissed? Wow….this was a new one. “Well, I’m an old widow, you know. Kissing is pretty normal for me.”
“That’s why it will be special when I kiss you.” He winked.
“ ‘When?’ ” I phrased with a hopeful inflection.
“When. In God’s timing.” Maybe a future remained for us. So far, I liked him.
I clasped my hands in classic prayer position, and in a teasing voice said, “God, please tell Bill to kiss me soon.”
Bill closed his eyes and cupped his ear with his hand. “I think I’m hearing something.”
“Really?” I grinned. “What’s the word?”
He opened his eyes and winked again. “In a blue moon.”
