“Hey Evie, can you grab the phone? I’m sure it’s not for me.”
“What do you mean, ‘it’s not for you?’” she answered angrily.
She gave her man a spiteful look; the phone rang out once more.
He wondered why he feared the Call… he never had before.
She snapped, “I cannot talk right now. I really must get dressed.”
She handed him the telephone, ignoring his distress.
He wished he could unplug the phone or throw the thing away,
But knew the Caller would not stop; the phone had rung all day.
“Hello?” he said, his voice was low, the phone pressed to his ear.
“Where have you been? You missed our date.” the Caller’s tone was clear.
“Uh, well…you know this wife of mine, she’s always running late.”
“And me? I had been feeling ill; ‘twas something that I ate.”
The Caller sighed and sorrow seemed to punctuate each word:
“You cannot hide the truth from me. I know what has occurred.”
“You disobeyed my one command. Now everything must change.”
Then Adam heard the line go dead. The phone went out of range.
The years slipped by and once again the phone began to ring.
A man named Noah answered it - for he was listening.
The Caller introduced Himself and they began to chat,
About the weather and big boats and where the world was at.
It was too bad that no one else picked up the telephone.
For Noah and his family went in the boat alone.
And when the rain began to fall, some folks called 911.
But all the lines were flooded then, the damage had been done.
The seasons passed and Noah’s sons had children of their own.
And once again the Caller tried to reach them on the phone.
But they were busy working so they put His call on hold.
If only they had heard His call, and done what they were told!
“We’ll build a tower to the sky and then we can transmit.”
“For we will do the calling then, when we decide it’s fit.”
But suddenly the air was filled with static, crackling sound.
The languages got all mixed up; they lost their common ground.
Throughout the book of Genesis, the story just repeats.
The people who ignored His calls, always faced defeats.
But those who listened and obeyed - He kept them on speed dial.
And every time they talked to Him, they found it was worthwhile.
I wish I’d always grab the phone and never hesitate.
No need to check the call’s ID - I’d never make Him wait.
And when I hear Him say “Hello”, I’d recognize His voice.
And even a quick SMS, would make my heart rejoice!
