That gossip is better avoided than sought;
Back then it was treated by most with disdain—
It rarely brought anyone fame or acclaim.
How much, in these times, have the tables been turned?—
The things that were once so avoided and spurned
Are now all the fashion and greatly desired
And gurus of gossip are rich and admired.
Paraded before us in flash magazines
The sad escapades of some ex movie queens
While much of the content of TV’s infused
With babble and gossip that’s passed off as news.
The faint spark that ignites a huge forest fire
Will nowhere be seen when flames have expired;
But the carnage it caused you plainly can see—
In like manner is gossip an incendiary.
The tongue, though so little, great fires can ignite
Our minds can be fed with so much that is trite;
Huge ships on the ocean, small rudders correct
As pilots or captains in charge so direct.
Leave gurus of gossip behind in your wake—
The light of their embers forever forsake;
The words of your Captain will light up your trip—
Make certain and sure He’s in charge of your ship.
