All chic in a Paris-made hat.
Her eyes lifted up, and behold!
A book by its cover’s not told:
For in her gaze depth was concern
Toward me, a fellow unlearned.
She smiled while her kindness cajoled:
A book by its cover’s not told.

He limped and was old and all bent,
His clothes showed he hadn’t a cent;
Coat ragged with shoes not half-soled;
A book by its cover’s not told:
For under his mattress was found
A stash of much cash that was bound
With multiple chains of pure gold!
A book by its cover’s not told.

Her laughter, infectious to all,
Rang freely across crowded halls;
The classmates chose her in a poll;
A book by its cover’s not told:
‘Cause Loni was wearing a mask—
To cover her pain a hard task—
Inside she was out of control:
A book by its cover’s not told.

Jake Hess was a big guy well-known,
His body huge-muscled and toned;
A brute who was pushy and bold;
A book by its cover’s not told:
Down under his oh-so-tough skin,
Jake hid a mild soul deep within;
He slept with a teddy bear old:
A book by its cover’s not told.

So wrinkled and lined was her face,
(Too old and infirm to embrace);
She laid there, unkempt and alone;
A book by its cover’s not told:
For praying was all that she had
To bless her and make her heart glad;
God’s arms stretched around her sweet soul;
A book by its cover’s not told.

An elder at church and revered,
He faithfully served, and appeared
At all the events to enroll;
A book by its cover’s not told:
‘Cause all was a practiced veneer
To cover his shame so severe—
His heart was unchanged and ice-cold—
A book by its cover’s not told.

I watch people come and then go,
And wonder how much they don’t show
Of what’s deep inside that they hold:
A book by its cover’s not told:
It seems that we hide from all eyes
The true person buried inside,
Afraid to unfurl all our folds,
A book by its cover’s not told.

Unsure to reveal what’s within,
(To open might break our thin skin)
We try to fit into their molds;
A book by its cover’s not told:
We fix what the naked eyes see;
It’s easier them to appease:
Revealing just part of the whole,
A book by its cover’s not told.

God seeks and He saves our lost souls;
He looks deep within all our holes
And cherishes us thousands-fold;
A book by its cover’s not told:
He sent His Son to be born,
Who took on our sins as His own;
Adopting us into His fold:
A Book by its covers foretold.
