The earth was moist and soft, and textured like fine sand
A form began to grow, a mirror of the King
With arms and legs and feet, and lips with which to sing
The Father’s skill was great, the man a work of art
With finely balanced limbs, a pump he called a heart
And eyes and ears and nose, and hair upon his head
A sculpture made by God, but motionless and dead
The Lord regarded man, an earthen creature still
An image of himself, but lacking life and will
He gathered up his form, and breathed a birthing sigh
Filled his nostrils up, released a joyful cry
And as the Father breathed, the man showed signs of life
Potential full and pure, and gifts and strength were rife
Then Adam took some breaths, breathed in and out and in
Lungs that functioned well, that pinked up sallow skin
His breath was straight from God, as ours is today
Oxygen and air, we breathe in work and play
This fragile gift we’re given, sustains our mortal frame
It is the breath of God, the whisper of his name
