“Are we there yet? We've been swimming forever. I'm tired. I'm hungry.” Baby Crab Cakes just wasn't very patient.
“We'll be there soon enough, Baby Cake.” Father King Crab answered for the ninth time.
“I want to go hang at The Great Barrier Reef, like all my BFF's! You know, Pops, lie on sunny, golden beaches, hike the rainforests, see some saltwater crocs and great whites! Get in on some action!” Crab Dip was now a teenager and he was ready to cut loose.
“This trip is especially for you, son. It's time you learned a thing or two about what's really important in life. Right mother?” Father King Crab always liked to run things by Mama Soft-Shell Crab.
“Yes, dear. As you say, dear. ”
Crab Dip was looking in every direction, but he couldn't see even the tip of The Great Barrier Reef. “Where are we? Are we lost? I don't see any Reefs. What's up?”
“We're stopping off at Christmas Island.” Father King Crab informed his clan as he led them ashore.
“What? It's not Christmas! I should've stayed home! I might've known you had something up your sleeve! I wish you'd let me live my own life. I'm young and ready to enjoy it. I'll settle down when the time is right. Christmas, indeed! Bor...ing.” Crab Dip was less than impressed.
“It's always Christmas on Christmas Island, son. Jimmy Buffett wrote a song about it, but he left out the best part. Here comes just the one to tell you about it.”
Crab Claus was slow, but he managed to speak to all new arrivals. “King, how you been? Nice family you got there. What's it been? Five years? Good to see you, for sure. Do you all know, Jesus? That's what's important.”
“Claus, Crab Dip's been running with Devil Crab and listening to a lot of garbage about Darwin. Even got him to thinking our Grand Pappy evolved from seaweed. I thought Christmas Island might be just the place to set him straight.”
“One of these days Devil Crab's going to be thrown into the great Crab Bisque along with his demons. Son, that's not for you. Let me tell you a parable...helps a lot of folks to get it.”
He who has an ear to hear let him hear the Crabable of Christmas Island:
“Christmas Island's not much to look at with all the steep cliffs along the coast. But, one thing they do better than anywhere on earth is the annual crab migration to the sea. It's one of the wonders of the natural world. Of course, it's just how our Creator designed it. Crabs travel by millions from the forest to the coast and then back again with all the new babies. It's a miracle, really. Our Creator loved even Crabs enough to show us how to synchronize the migration with the cycle of the moon. Try that with evolution. We're all part of something so much grander.
“Captain William Mynors arrived here on The Royal Mary . The reef surrounding the island kept him from coming ashore. He could have just passed by, but he named Christmas Island after The Christ Child whose birthday is celebrated every day on Christmas Island. You see, he got it. All are created special in God's eyes with a purpose. You just have to believe. And on Christmas Island even those with faith as small as a grit are able to see it. Can you?”
Not a dry eye was to be found as Crabs from all over the world learned the wondrous story of their Savior.
“Now go out there and tell someone. Don't be Blue and don't be a Hermit!”
That's the day Crab Dip grew up and told Devil Crab to go to the....well, the Devil, of course.
Now go out there and tell someone Jesus loves them and for goodness sake, quit being so Crabby!
