As the plane made a slow descent—
My heart skipped a beat, I gasped aloud—
How much this blessed moment meant!
There, way below stretched a panoply
Of all the fairest shades of green—
A patchwork quilt, yet a tapestry--
What an exhilarating scene!
All the countryside now greeting us
Laid out its carpet fresh and clean—
All Ireland wears her charming dress—
There’s such a softness in her green.
“Remember those who left long ago?
Departed these picturesque parts,
Never to see this beauty below
But you were treasured in their hearts”.
There’s mist on the green; perhaps my eyes?
Maybe it’s the mountains that mourn,
It’s as if the land can empathise
With those who can never return?
Wind greets my face on leaving the plane
Welcome back to Erin’s Green Isle!!
“Thank God I’m here to see you again,
To walk your green fields for a while”.
