His shield was deathly dark, the colour of his soul
I cringed as he approached, my heart consumed with fear
My legs felt weak and limp, I didn’t want him near
On and on he came, his helmet dusk and gloom
The stench of hell was strong, impending fear and doom
I crouched against the wall, what could he want with me
Filth dribbled from his breastplate, pure evil I could see
His waist was bound with fibs, deceit and brazen lies
And both his feet were shod, with conflict great in size
I lifted shaking arms, please leave me, go away
Demonic cackles echoed, for sin you have to pay
I felt the fires of Hell, black smoke so thick and vile
And darts that stung and burned, and filled my throat with bile
The knight was hissing now, his eyes a smudge of hate
Get up you snivelling worm, prepare to meet your fate
As shadows filled my heart, I cried a desperate prayer
I’m sorry, please forgive me - Lord are you even there
The flash of light was blinding, a brilliance so bright
The contrast was amazing, pure darkness and pure light
Then Jesus stood before me, words ringing loud and clear
You need the shield of faith, to overcome your fear
And put these on your feet, the gospel shoes of peace
And gird yourself with truth, to make deception cease
I dressed myself in armour, a suit of gleaming white
The dark knight roared in anger, preparing for a fight
I need a weapon, Lord, to thwart this evil foe
He handed me a sword, My Word will make him go
Prepared and dressed for battle, I faced the demon king
But now he seemed so puny, it was the strangest thing
With victory in my heart, I slashed him through and through
The Word of God is powerful, alive and strong and true
The knight was leaking darkness, blackness grime and pain
His life blood slowly oozing, an oily pungent stain
And as his armour fell, great joy infused my heart
The Lord had won the battle, and I had played my part
