when we got out of bed,
a thousand feet of snow had fallen!
“No school,” the weather man said.
We hurried through our breakfast,
made plans to fill our day,
a winter wonderland was waiting
for sledding, skating, and play.
But first the law of mother
so we wouldn’t catch our death,
she swaddled us like mummies
‘til we couldn’t catch a breath:
Long johns, sweaters, pants, and hats,
two pairs of gloves and socks,
a snowsuit sealed it all in place,
a scarf wound tight and locked.
Plastic bags inside our boots
for added dryness and warmth,
like brightly colored beach balls,
we bobbed and bounded forth.
I don’t know what possessed me
as I gazed out at that day,
like the apple in the garden
I was tempted from my play.
The flagpole stood majestic
all slick and covered with ice
a silvery sweet popsicle
my tongue it did entice.
Oh, the pain, humiliation,
now what was I to do?
My tongue was held a captive
by an evil, unseen glue.
I heard the squeals and shouting
of the kids upon their sleds,
and felt their fear and excitement
as down the hill they sped.
All around me friends were playing,
with their snowball fights and forts,
building snowmen and snow angels
and other winter sports.
Even worse my pain and suffering
if they should find me here
stuck to this stupid flagpole
I could hear their laughter and jeers.
And what about my family
would they miss me, would they care,
drinking cocoa by the fire
while I’m eaten by a bear?!
Oh, they’ll be sorry, that’s for sure
when they awake next morn
staring out the ice-glazed window
at my stiff and frozen form.
And what a funeral they’ll give
with weeping and with cries,
there’ll be a touching eulogy
as in my box I lie.
But then an amazing thing happened,
it was a miracle, I was free!
So I waddled off to join my friends,
“Hey you guys, wait for me!”
