ADD TO MY FAVORITES
strange, diverse varieties, they set my mind a-whirl.
But I have chosen just a few
to pay my summer homage to.
To all the creepy-crawlies that here on earth do live,
if I have failed to mention you, my omission please forgive.
Menacing mosquitoes, those mighty marauders of man,
with military skill they execute their ticklish plan:
“Hit ‘em fast, boys, hit ‘em low,
look out now, you can’t be slow,
‘cause those things that they call hands, can in one fell swoop,
squash you flat then flick you off in death’s decisive loop!”
Bumblebee, bumblebee buzzing and bobbing
paper-thin wings set my garden to throbbing.
Black and yellow fuzzy collector
of a flower’s pollen and nectar.
Lumbering, bumbling, shy around strangers,
gentle and hard-working pollinators.
Agile ants awaken, antennae at attention,
working for their colony with grim determination.
Marching, marching, hup-two-three
to picnics for a feeding spree.
These ants are on a mission as across my floor they reign,
marching, marching, step in time, they will not be detained.
Furtive fleas flip-flopping so fast and so fleet,
the distance they jump a remarkable feat!
Hard to believe these tiny mites,
pack a wallop in every bite.
With little respect for man or for beast,
these fearless diners enjoy their feast.
Beautiful butterflies basking in sunbeams,
gracefully floating like warm summer daydreams.
Seeking blossoms, nectar-sweet,
sipping through straws until replete.
Lovely and delicate nymphs and fairies
gaily dance through gardens and prairies.
Clicking, clacking crickets create quite a cacophony
singing to their mates in a summer symphony.
Listen to their evensong
chirping, chirping all night long:
“Cricket, cricket” fills the air with music clear and bright,
like an ancient mantra chanted in the summer night.
Lovely little lightning bugs let love-light lead the way,
delighting all the children who in summer nights do play.
Twinkle, twinkle little stars
twinkling in a mason jar.
Set them free to fly away and brighten up the night
decorating trees and grass with tiny flickering lights.
The scintillating swarms of summer fill the nights and days;
they pester, bother, delight, amuse in oh so many ways.
They can be useful or offend,
be an enemy or a friend.
But our Creator made them all, designed them for a reason,
so we respect each living thing; thank God it’s just one season!
