hand-in-hand
they walk the tightrope of life,
an unlikely couple,
a paradox,
needing each other,
providing balance.
“Come my Love, my Sweet,”
says Bitter to his bride.
“Death approaches
with his bitter twins,
Grief and Sorrow.
Come my sweet Comforter,
bring your healing kiss
of cherished memories and
the reassurance of eternal life.”
“Ah my husband,
Bitter you are,
yet I need your piquancy
to lift me up when I wallow
in a maudlin mire
of syrupy sweetness,
you add zest and meaning to my life.”
“Come my Love, my Sweet,”
says Bitter to his bride.
“Anger and resentment
are about to take root,
planting their bitter seeds.
Come sweet Wind of Charity,
with your breath of forgiveness
blow away the bitter seeds.”
“Ah my husband,
Bitter you are,
yet I need your acerbic humor
to temper my cloying emotions.

your pungency helps me laugh
at my own silliness.”
“Come my Love, my Sweet,”
says Bitter to his bride.
“Hatred and fear prowl around,
hungry lions waiting to devour,
their breath the bitter scent of rot and decay.
Come my sweet Angel of Peace,
tame them with your tenderness,
your kind and gentle demeanor.
“Ah my husband,
Bitter you are,
yet perfect for me.
Your tanginess compliments my sweetness;
like lemonade we are,
the perfect blend of bitter and sweet.”
Bitter and Sweet,
hand-in-hand
they walk the tightrope of life,
an unlikely couple,
a paradox,
needing each other,
providing balance.
