You say you can’t wait? You don’t know the first thing about anticipation. I’ve been looking forward to this for an eternity!
They say of me that a thousand days is like an evening. Well let me tell you, sometimes a single day seems like a thousand. All part of being the uncreated Eternal One, of course.
I just can’t wait for Christmas! I’m chewing my metaphorical nails and sitting on the edge of my figurative seat. You’ll never guess what I have to give you! No… no… no… you needn’t try, because you just won’t be able to. It’s beyond anything you’ve ever imagined. It’s… it’s… it’s so wonderful – so gob-smackingly stupendous – you’re going to be bowled over!
I know I’ve given you a few hints through the years, but really, it’s far better than your wildest dreams. Far better, even, than all the other gifts I’ve given you. Remember when I set the glory of the universe at your feet? Believe me, that will pale into insignificance when you meet the One who spoke it into existence. Or remember the transcendent wonder of your wedding night? That’s just a two-dimensional image of the unspeakable reality I’ve got planned.
Hold on, let me look at your Christmas list…
Number one. You’re sick of stumbling in the darkness. You’d like a pocket torch. Oh, my friend, you have no idea! Just wait ‘til you see what I’ve got you!
(But of course, how could you be as eager to receive light, as I am to give it? You’ve never really seen true light. I am the Light!)
Number two. You’d like something nice to eat. Oh, just you wait! Gingerbread? Chocolates? Nah, you’d be hungry again in no time. How do you fancy the Bread of life? Generous portions, unlimited supply, guaranteed to satiate, warranted never to jade your palate…
Am I whetting your appetite yet?
Number three. Your life is dull and drab. You’d like something to cheer you up for a week or two. My child, you’re setting your sights so low. How about super-abundant, hyper-overflowing, joy-oozing, capacity-tearing, mind-blowing, imagination-stretching, mega-sizzling, never-ending Life? Oh, I’m sorry, human words fail me sometimes. You’ll just have to wait and see.
You say you can’t wait for Christmas. But your desire for my present is so puny compared to my craving to give it to you. After all, my excitement is fuelled by an eternity of planning; a bottomless love; and an infinite imagination. Sorry to pull rank, but there it is.
Oh, my dearest child. Just a few days to go. You think you’re excited? Have I got a gift for you!
