I knew what you’d become
I didn’t want to care for you
Or to your charms succumb
I didn’t want to love you
And have you walk away
I didn’t want to give my heart
And know you would betray
I married you and cared for you
I loved and gave my heart
Despite the knowledge that one day
You’d tear my life apart
God told me it would be this way
Unfaithful you would be
Our marriage was to mirror Israel’s
Infidelity
You turned to other lovers for
The things that they could give
Sold your soul for baubles thinking
“These, I need, to live.”
I didn’t want to let you go
But you refused to stay
You packed a few belongings
And left one summer’s day
It seemed that every day I heard
Another lurid tale
As if I somehow needed to
Hear every sad detail
Through all the days, the months, the years
I waited patiently
I’d smell your fragrance in our house
Your image often see
I waited for the time when you
Would see with opened eyes
The life you’d built was nothing but
A flimsy web of lies
The day arrived, God spoke a word
To find and reclaim you
To pay the price to bring you home
And feel love burst anew
God’s promise to his people is
A love that will endure
That one day He will claim them back
Of this we can be sure
There’s healing and forgiveness
A strong and warm embrace
A patient love engraved upon
A smiling, tender face
Based on the book of Hosea
