when we were children
my sister and I
Our parents seemed
to holler a lot
at us, but
we were just kids
and I was the older brother
And we loved each other
a lot
our whole life
as brother and sister
She used to sit
in front of the
heater grill
in the livingrooom
a lot
her young blonde head
resting against the wall
reading a book
opened in her lap
She did the same thing
studying a lot
for her college
degree until she met
the love of her life,
married, and moved
into her own home
She had a lot
of children
in her happy marriage
two girls and a boy
brothers and sisters
I didn’t see her
a lot
as we moved through
life, but when we did
it was important to
each of us to just know
we had each other
Siblings
brothers and sisters
know each other
their whole lives
longer than marriages
longer than they know
their parents, or children,
or grandparents, or aunts,
or uncles
They are
when all is said and done
one true family
their joint memories
go back to infancy
and childhood
They know each other
better than anyone else
knows them
and there is an unusual
bond between them
whether they recognize
it
or not
for life
My younger sister
died recently
a wasting death
of microstrokes in
in the brain
that took her short term
then long term
then all her memory and
mind
Until the end she
recognized my voice
as her brother
and her wonderful
lifelong husband
lay in bed and held her
as her last breath left
her body
She held out
for a long time
I’m not exactly sure why
I felt it was a final
message
an acknowledgement
of our bond
of
brother and sister
she waited
to
end her suffering
and let go
finally
on my birthday

Just an opinion, but this flowed really well in the beginning, and perhaps not as well toward the middle and end.
A wonderful message - and the last stanza hit me hard. Nicely done.
