she found a way
to say,
“I love you.”
For you see
she was paralyzed by death’s grip.
No hope
in the form of disease.
Yes, our mom was dying,
could not speak her mind,
but she found a way
to say,
“I love you.”
She was so weak. We held her hand.
The doctors of course denied…
said she no longer knew.
The slightest movement was no use.
Not medically, anyway.
The nurses’ treatment of her body at times
was unkind.
But we had made promises…
and we kept them;
fiercely.
Feeling guilty, feeling helpless
against the critical sounds
of life,
we found a way to reach her.
She was in so much pain. We stroked her brow.
That morning our anger broke…
that morning God spoke
and we knew
she was going Home.
No longer could she move a finger,
no longer could she move her foot.
Our father needed to say goodbye,
too frail to be by her side,
we set the speakerphone on high;
and his words were of love,
of hope,
and “One day soon.”
She raised her eyebrows three times. We told him what she said.
A tear glistened the corner of her lashes--
so tiny,
it disappeared at my sister’s touch.
Our tears unashamed of their sorrow,
hearts racing, knowing
finality was near;
the beep of moments fading.
Her heart reaching, leaving;
breathing no longer her own,
but she made sure we knew…
she found a way
to say,
“I love you, very-very much.”
Her chains were gone … she’d been set free.

I picture a woman ready to meet her maker, but at the same time, she also wants to be sure that her family knows how much she cares, before she makes the transition from her frail Earthly body to her beautiful brand new Heavenly body.
To be able to deliver such a powerful message amidst the mourning is very commendable. A beautiful tribute!
