Evan and Angel put the last dishes in the sink after dinner and ran out the back door. The red-haired, freckle-faced twosome had an agenda. They learned that morning in children’s church how they were to tell the whole world about Jesus. That’s just what these five-year old twins intended to do.
They got their little New Testaments out of the car and sat on the porch. Evan opened his Bible. Leafing through it, he shared his wisdom with Angel. “Jesus loves me, this I know. See here?” He was pointing to words on a page—he couldn’t read, but he remembered the song. “The Bible tells me so.”
Angel smiled, “Oh, I know, my Bible says so, too! See?” She randomly pointed to a passage in her Bible.
“Let’s go tell Mrs. Sullivan about Jesus!”
The two agreed and took off. Unafraid and unashamed, they knocked at her door. Standing perfectly still, Bibles in hand, they waited patiently until the elderly woman answered her door.
“Well, hello children! What are you up to today?”
Evan took the lead. “We’re here to tell you what our Bibles say.”
With a smile she nodded. “I’m listening…”
Angel spoke up. “See here, it says Jesus loves me, this I know. And we want everyone to know about Jesus so we’re telling the whole world.”
“Yep, starting with you! You’re our first customer!” Evan could make anyone laugh.
“Well, children, I am a Christian and I know Jesus very well. But, you are so brave! I am so proud of you. Why don’t you come in; I’ve got some milk and cookies.”
“No, sorry. We have to go tell the world and we can’t go too far from home cuz we have Church tonight.”
Laughing, Mrs. Sullivan agreed, understanding their new-found urgency to share the Gospel.
“Why don’t you stop by next door to talk to Mr. McPherson? And, while you do, I’ll pray that God will use you to speak to him in a very special way.”
The children turned and began to run down the sidewalk. “Thanks, Mrs. Sullivan! Good idea!”
Angel rang the doorbell. Evan bent down to tie his shoe (a proud accomplishment) as Angel straightened her dress.
“Can I help you?”
“Hi Mr. McPherson. We want to tell you something.”
The twins thumbed through their Bibles pointing at words they were too young to read. “Jesus loves me, this I know. For the Bible tells me so. See?”
Evan showed Mr. McPherson his Bible. He stood there for a moment gazing at the words his little visitor unwittingly pointed out to him. He took the Bible and began to read aloud.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.”
Tears formed in his eyes as he gently closed the book and handed it back to Evan.
“Yes, son, Jesus loves me, this I know for the Bible tells me so, too. It seems I’ve forgotten that through the years.”
“Oh, Mr. McPherson, you can know Him. We just gotta ask and He comes into our hearts and makes us brand new, just like my Bible says.” Evan pointed to his Bible again hoping Mr. McPherson would see how smart he was.
Angel watched intently. “Are you a Christian?”
“I used to go to church a long time ago. Hmmm, do you think I could go with you the next time your family goes to church?”
“Yes sir!”
After exchanging tender hugs, Evan and Angel ran down the sidewalk past Mrs. Sullivan’s yelling, “We told him!” She clapped for them as the twins ran home.
“Mom! We told Mr. McPherson about Jesus. He wants to go to church with us.”
Mom dropped everything and knelt down to look her little evangelists in the eyes. “Before you were born, we asked God to help us raise you to serve Him. That’s why we named you Evan and Angel: Evangelists—ones who announce the Good News.” She hugged them. “I’ll call Mr. McPherson; we’ll take him with us tonight.”
