The creature crouches, her hair bristling. One false step and she will rip the passer-by from limb to limb. Usually she would just slink away, but now she has babies to consider. Life has changed.
“I hate you, Daddy.” The child thrashes, screams, sobs and wildly strikes at the man who is now the centre of her life. It is of no use. His grip is unyielding, no matter how hard she fights. The streetlights cast a yellow haze over the empty asphalt.
The child’s mother remains in that big white building, lying much too still.
Surely God is good … to those who are pure in heart. (Psalm 73:1 NIV)
The child is not pure, but her anger is reasonable.
When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.
Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel… (Psalm 73:21-24a NIV)
It’s not my fault. I didn’t do anything wrong. It isn’t even like I can ‘do conflict resolution’. Who can argue with destiny? But I am so angry I could explode into billions of pieces. I could scream so that the penguins and researchers would hear me in Antarctica.
What choice do I have? My Father effortlessly drags me, kicking, hollering and cursing. I’m rendered effectively helpless, my right hand firmly encased in His powerful grip.
When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you. (Psalm 73:21-22 NIV)
Our heavenly Protector understands. As a caring Father, to we who are ‘pure in heart’, even at the peak of our beastly behaviour, He simply takes us by our right hand and guides us to where we need to be.
My heart and my flesh may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (Psalm 73:26 NIV)
Author’s Note:
This was written by a middle aged ‘little girl’, grateful for the firm directive grip of her heavenly Father during one of life’s little upheavals.
