TITLE: Long Distance Calling | Previous Challenge Entry

The voice I heard sighed,” This is Joe.
Please help me out but not with money
I’m begging please … say something funny.”
Stalling for some time to think
I told him I was tickled pink
To hear a friend who needed wit
I’d get some tea and gab a bit
His day had been a total loss
From windblown hair to fired by boss
He’d started out with two left shoes
But one was black the other blue
By the time he’d gone back home
To fix his feet and find his comb
He hoped he hadn’t lost employment
From that job with no enjoyment
As the clock was striking nine
His growling tummy took a shine
For something sweet and not too fat
Alas, that’s when he found the cat
Her cries were heard beneath his deck
He pulled her out and strained his neck
And cut his hand and sprained his wrist
The three worst things upon that list
But Kitty won the bad-day prize
She begged for help with screaming eyes
Poor thing was panting “hee” and” hoo”
A sure-fire sign that she was due
It was too late to call the vet
And besides he knew his pet
She’d want her birthing room just right
Back in his closet, out of sight
With Mommy cat snug in her box
He found his shoe-- then saw his socks
One was brown and one was red
(Color-blind or just un-wed?)
With tootsies matching each the other
He made a check on feline mother
Now she had it in her head
To birth those kids right on his bed
A girl in labor gets to choose
That comfy place -- no matter whose
With that he left her to her chore
And bolted for his open door
On the porch were guys with tracts
Who witnessed with some doubtful facts
He said his Bible was the Key
And asked them both to sit and read
To his surprise they really sat
He promised to return to chat
Then whirled around and waved goodbye
And rolled his eyes and heaved a sigh
Behind the wheel, he really tried
But found his car had up and died
He asked the Lord to intervene
And that’s how I came on the scene
When I arrived to rescue Joe
I found him laughing, no more woe!
Those men had joined the giggle fest
And I could see someone was blessed
He felt they searched for easy prey
And left behind, they would not stay
But when he’d seen his porch again
There they were –each with a grin
Knowing what this guy believed
I knew he could not be deceived
So as they stood beneath that oak
It was for real, this was no joke
Joe did not see he had no lamp
Until he took that exit ramp
His destiny was geared to teach
I asked him why he didn’t preach
To get our minds and spirits where
The Lord will take us, if we dare
To listen and step out and go
We need to be like my friend Joe
I'm thinking God had had enough
Of that day’s blinding silly stuff
In trying to make one man pause
And OBEY Him…just because
Now school was what he’d be about
If once again I'd ” help him out”
I rushed right in but stopped with dread
At what was curled up on his bed
Exhausted now, she purred with pride
Five newborn babies at her side
Her tired sweet eyes just seemed to say
“Thank you ma’am, you’ve saved the day.”
At least my pal was chuckling now
In fact, I thought he’d have a cow!
His merry heart sure did him good
And echoed in the neighborhood
Sweet kittens and a darling cat
Would live with me -- and that was that
Some things do not count as cost
When aiding those who love the lost
We may not be the ones who serve
The front lines found around that curve
But there are things for us to do
To help support that special few
So, if you’re called don’t hesitate
To offer wit, or stand and wait
Or answer friends who phone to plea…
The bell that tolls may be for thee.
