I shopped each aisle, perused each style. I wished that all were mine.
From soy soaps to diamond rings, I strolled the hip bazaar
for items that had been brought in from near and from afar.
I shopped with glee until I heard a voice from out the blue.
It said, “Before you purchase that, I’d like a word with you.”
I stopped and looked to see who spoke, but no one looked my way,
so I ignored the words I heard and used my card to pay.
But once more came that strange new voice as clear as clear could be,
“Before you sign the dotted line, please listen now to me.”
“I think that I am hearing things!” I mentioned to the clerk.
She droned, “I only hear the clock. Just half and hour to work.”
I took my card and turned to go without the thing I chose.
I walked away through trinket aisles and racks of trendy clothes.
I found a place to sit a spell, regroup my wits once more.
Now, had I really heard a voice inside my favorite store?
Then deep within my heart of hearts I heard it speak to me,
but this time many voices joined in urgent, passioned plea.
“You have the power to make a change, the power to reach lost souls.
You have resources God has given, your silver and your gold.”
“Do you not hear the cries of those who need to know His Name?
Will you replace the Word of God with trinkets, clothes and games?”
“Your closets bulge with luxuries, some you don’t know you have.
You ‘shop ‘til you drop’ and use each trip as a nerve relaxing salve.”
“And all the while lost souls cry out for someone who can come
and tell them of eternal Life through Jesus, God’s dear Son.”
“There in your hand you hold the means to send the Gospel far,
but you’ve decided souls can wait ‘til after your next new car.”
Their voices faded with the blare of MallyWorld’s announcement
that clearance prices soon would drop in every store department.
The masses raced to get the goods, and I almost did too,
but something warm stirred in my heart. I knew what I must do.
I prayed for guidance from the Lord and went straight to the church.
“Dear pastor, help me know which work I should be helping first.”
He smiled and said, “Let’s both seek out the ministry God chooses.
You’ll be surprised at how your gifts can be put to God’s uses.”
“Your gifts can go to missionaries, schools, and fields at home.
Your gifts will go to needs far greater than you’ve ever known.”
“God’s called you to a task divine, investment of your wealth.
Be wise and willing as He guides, and you’ll see for yourself.”
“Each dollar used in worldly ways just shrinks and fades away,
but when we give it to the Lord, lives are forever changed.”
