The camera pulled back to reveal the winners, their gold medals gleaming in the late afternoon sun.
“Here we have the first place winner in the Running at the Mouth event, Fiona Flapgums! Congratulations, Fiona!”
Fiona stepped forward and bowed dramatically, waving and blowing kisses.
“Next we have the winner in the Dodging Responsibility event, Dudley ‘not my job’ Deadbeat!”
Nodding toward the camera, Dudley gave a quick wave.
Rebecca continued exuberantly, “Our champion in the Conclusion Jump is Fred Factless! Way to go Fred!”
Fred grinned, holding up his medal and mouthing “Thank you” to the camera.
“Our next event is somewhat new, but gaining popularity fast. First place in Throwing Under the Bus is Betty Backstabner! Congratulations!”
Clasping her hands in the air, Betty beamed victoriously.
“Our final competitor is from an event that, after this year, will no longer be featured here at the All-Church Games. Receiving the gold in Fighting the Good Fight of Faith is Gilbert Godly!”
Gilbert smiled politely at the camera.
“So, Gilbert,” Rebecca began, “since we won’t be seeing your event again, do you have any parting words for us?”
Looking past the camera into the crowd, Gilbert answered, “I’m very, very disappointed that Fighting the Good Fight of Faith is being eliminated. I feel it’s probably the most important event and without it, I don’t know what will happen within the church.”
There was a huffy snort from Fiona, followed by the buzz of whispering.
“Well,” Rebecca smiled, continuing, “many people say with the rapid advancement of technology and healthcare in recent years, the event is outdated and unnecessary. That as a culture we’ve grown beyond the need for ‘old-fashioned’ faith. How would you respond to that?”
“Faith is absolutely necessary if we are to survive as Christians. The Bible says that without faith it is impossible to please God, and His Word is never outdated because God is never outdated. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. No amount of technology can replace faith in the God of the universe.”
“Gee, Gilbert, maybe you should have entered the Preaching to the Choir event!” Rebecca giggled, amused with herself. Seeing Gilbert’s sad stare, she quickly regained her composure.
“Uh…obviously, you are a man of some conviction. So what will you be doing now?”
“Oh, I’ll keep fighting…fighting for a greater prize. I just hope I won’t be the only one.”
“Sure! That sounds great!” Rebecca cheered through a saccharin smile. “Keep on keeping on! Maybe….maybe you can return next time in one of the other events!”
Gilbert looked over toward the other medalists. “I don’t think so,” he answered quietly.
“Well, we wish you, all of you, the best! And a big congratulations to all our competitors; you’re all winners! This is Rebecca Stone with Channel 5 News. Good night!”
