I see faces.
Faces in my memory,
countless faces in my walk
through life.
Old, young, dim,
barely remembered
and their past and future
with my past and future
lay behind and before me
written somewhere on my face.
I am overcome
with the immensity of the world
and the numbers of
people in it.
When I walk
over beach or field or concrete
their number, their faces
their humanity,
individual or coupled
are present before me.
I see the high school
cheerleader
in the wrinkled face
of the old woman
in the grocery line.
I see the bright eyed
dreamer
in the wrinkled face
of the old cowboy
along the Arizona highway.
I see the youth and beauty
in the young who
rule the world in
their perceived
immortality and knowledge
appearing to them as truth
and wisdom.
No two faces the same
not their past,
not their future,
some close perhaps,
but never exactly the same.
Heredity or spirit that
lights the flesh from within
radiating out before the world
making us completely different,
individual I am,
close but never exact
in our faces.
Choices
the one’s in their walk
in life behind them
and their choices
and future before
read in their faces
like the book of their
life to come and to be.
Youth and beauty,
wisdom and knowledge,
spirit and soul,
shine forth
the Christ within us
through the journey
we’ve taken,
the life we’ve led,
and the decisions
that have made us
as we appear.
Look into the faces
around you. See
their past, their future,
and their being.
Shiver in understanding
and love as you share
their walk, their being,
their existence
as they pass you
unnoticed
on the busy street.
We enter life with beautiful
unmarked faces, prepared
and struggling to
stand immediately
and begin our
walk.
Our faces are pure and angelic
awake or asleep and
life and personality
take over our face
and our smile.
We begin our walk,
our destiny of choices,
with a stumbling walk,
through a youthful run
to a rambling even gait,
to a slow shuffle and,
finally,
to a dead stop.
The final face is not us
waxed and rouged, but
empty of life and spirit.
We came in soft, clean, pure
and leave lined, leathered,
wise and beautiful
for
regardless of what we think or feel
we never walk alone.
He is with us always.
His hand in ours.
His spirit in us.
His love surrounding in us.
We know this.
We show this.
In our faces.
