Now, he looked back at Anna with hollowed, vacant eyes—a stranger trapped in the shell of the husband she had adored. Andrew was slipping away, snatched from her in slow motion by early-onset dementia.
His physical frame remained anchored to the narrow bed, shadowed by the rhythmic, mechanical drone of the oxygen machine, but his mind had been taken hostage by a reality she could not penetrate.
"Stay away!" Andrew’s voice cracked. The confusion in his mind caused him to lash out at the very people dedicated to his care.
Then came the accusation—a dagger that cut far deeper than any physical blow could manage.
"Get your hands off me!" he barked, flinching as if the gentle, soothing touch of a CNA were a burning ember. His white-knuckled hands curled into tight fists. "You’re one of them. I know it. You stole that million dollars from me!"
He snarled, his frail frame vibrating with a turbulent, oily rage that didn’t belong to the man she knew and loved. "If you don’t get out of here right now, I’m going to break you in two like a twig."
Tears stung Anna’s eyes, but she swallowed the lump in her throat. The cruelest part of his condition wasn’t just his delusional thoughts; it was the heavy burden of her own vivid ones.
She remembered the vows they had spoken before an altar, their shared faith, and the beautiful life they had built. While he drowned in a sea of nameless faces and sudden terrors, she bore the crushing weight of keeping their story alive all by herself.
Taking a steadying breath, she placed a quiet hand over her own heart, asking for the grace to endure this trial with patience. She could not fix what was broken in his mind, but she could be the hands of Jesus to him, weathering this dark night with a love that never fails.
She stepped out into the hallway, her shoulders shaking as she surrendered her broken heart to the Lord. Yet, a sharp ache of betrayal and confusion lingered. She cried out in silent anguish, wondering why the heavens felt so painfully silent, and why the God she had trusted with her whole life felt as though He were a million miles away.
“Lord, where are You?” she prayed, the question echoing in the quiet of her soul. “I am carrying this cross, and I cannot do it alone.”
Sitting beside him once more, she watched the frantic storm in Andrew’s eyes settle into a deep, disorienting peace.
He looked down, gently tracing the familiar lines of her palms. His gaze was no longer vacant; instead, it shone with a radiant joy that defied time. In the soft, fading afternoon light, he smiled up at her. He whispered that the babies would be here soon. He promised her it would be a beautiful boy and girl, precious gifts they had spent a lifetime praying for, finally resting in her loving arms.
For one suspended, perfect moment, the dark shadows of his mind dissolved. The fog lifted, leaving only the purest love as he looked at her, eager and ready to welcome the miracle he was so certain was on its way.
Anna’s heart swelled, a gentle, healing warmth washing over her soul. She knew the confusion would likely return, that tomorrow might bring a different kind of storm. But in that sacred, quiet pause, God had met her right in the middle of her grief. He had answered her silent prayers, holding her close and reminding her that His enduring love remained.
Before she left for the evening, Andrew took her hand and spoke the familiar words he always used to send her off—a soothing balm to her weary soul.
"I love you, baby," he whispered, "with all my heart."
