When John was fully convinced
That he couldn’t do what he was supposed to do;
In choosing the right over the wrong
When he thought he had the most ‘to lose’.
But there came a day when Grace came along
Proving how possible it was to choose…
…Choose to just forgive
When he felt cruelly betrayed
By someone he had deeply cared for, for long;
He just couldn’t help nursing his wound
Or holding tight to his right to a grudge
Then Grace came along, got his thoughts attuned
To the truth that Christ had forgiven his worst.
…Choose to keep trusting
In trying times and ordeals
When his life as a whole spun out of control;
He let anxiety rule his heart and mind
Usurping his peace for a long spell,
Then Grace came along, persuading big-time
That his God of love “does all things well”
…Choose to be quiet
For the sake of the Gospel
When laughed at and excluded for his convictions;
And the temptation to lash out
In self-defense felt fully justified,
Then Grace came along, proved without a doubt
He had God’s power to let it all slide.
…Choose to persevere
Against all odds stacked up high
When quitting seemed to be his only option,
When one step forward followed two steps back
Making his future look dark and bleak,
Then Grace came along, with the best comeback,
“If you do not give up, in due season you will reap”
…Choose to love, in deed,
Not let hate rear its ugly head
At the worst employer he could ever have had;
When skewering the boss with coworkers
Did not appear so undeserved
Then Grace came along, steeling his resolve
To “love your enemy” without reserve.
John has come to know
It is possible to choose
Choose the higher road whatever it involves;
When the “God of all grace” supplies the means
To overcome natural inclination,
That Grace comes along, proportionate to needs
However difficult the situation.
