A sudden knock startled her.
“Another customer,” she sighed, rising to answer.
Two strangers stood outside. Their clothing marked them as travelers, but something guarded flickered in their eyes.
“How can I help you?” she asked cautiously.
“We need lodging for the night,” one replied. “Someplace safe.”
“Just lodging? Nothing more?” Rahab asked, accustomed to hidden motives.
“Just lodging,” the other answered firmly.
She studied them. There was something different about them—quiet, purposeful. “My rooms are full,” she said slowly, though they were not. “But I can take you to the roof. You’ll be safe there.”
Relief crossed their faces. “Thank you. That will be perfect.”
She led them upstairs and concealed them beneath bundles of drying flax. Moments later, another knock pounded at her door. This knock carried authority.
Two messengers of the king stood before her. “Some Israelites have entered Jericho to spy out the land,” one declared. “They were seen coming here. Bring them out.”
Her heart pounded, but her voice remained steady. “Yes, they came,” she said evenly. “But I had no room. I did not know who they were. I told them to leave before the gates closed. If you hurry, perhaps you will catch them.”
Rahab closed the door and leaned against it, breath trembling in her chest. She had just lied to the king’s men. A punishment leading to death if caught. Why? What was it about those strangers that compelled her to risk everything?
When the inn settled into evening quiet, she returned to the roof.
“May I ask you something?” She whispered.
“What would you like to know?” One asked from beneath the blanket of flax.
“I know who you are,” she whispered. “The Lord has given this land to you. We have heard how He dried up the Red Sea and defeated Sihon and Og. Your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.” Her voice faltered. “When you destroy this city, will you spare me and my family? I have shown you kindness. Will you show it to us?”
The men exchanged a glance. “Our lives for yours,” one answered solemnly. “If you do not betray us, we will spare you and all who gather in your house.”
“How will I know you will keep your word?” Rahab pressed.
“Tie this scarlet cord in your window,” they instructed. “It will mark your house. Gather your family inside. If anyone leaves, their blood is on their own head. But all who remain under your roof will live.”
Rahab nodded. “Agreed. “
That night she lowered the men down the outer wall by a rope and watched them disappear into the darkness. Then she tied the scarlet cord in her window.
The next day she summoned her family. “Come stay with me,” she urged.
“Why?” they demanded.
“I cannot explain, but you must trust me.”
It took pleading and persistence, but one by one they came. Rahab dismissed her customers and filled every room with brothers, sisters, parents, and children. She gave only one command: “Do not leave this house.”
Days later, Jericho shook beneath marching feet and the blast of trumpets. The mighty walls groaned and collapsed in thunderous ruin.
All except one section.
Rahab stood at her window, fingers wrapped around the scarlet cord. Outside was chaos. Inside was stillness.
And grace.
In that moment, Rahab understood grace—the unearned, undeserved favor of a holy God who saw beyond her past and into her faith. The woman who believed she was beyond redemption discovered she had been seen all along.
Not as a harlot.
But as a daughter worth saving.

How encouraging:)
I liked the ending phrase:
“Not as a harlot.
But as a daughter worth saving.”
