Abraham’s voice broke through the house, sharp with urgency.
“I’m coming,” Sarah called, irritation already rising. She wiped her hands on her tunic and hurried toward him.
Abraham stood motionless, breath shallow, his heart pounding as if it might betray him. The Lord’s command rang in his ears, relentless and unyielding: Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love…
Sarah stopped when she saw his face. “Abraham,” she said slowly, “what is it? You look as though the ground has shifted beneath you.”
He swallowed hard. “I am going to Mount Moriah to worship the Lord.”
She waited, dread creeping into her eyes.
“I’m taking Isaac.”
The words landed between them like a blow. Sarah’s hands tightened into fists. “Mount Moriah?” she whispered. “That’s three days away.”
“The Lord told me to go.”
Silence filled the room. Then Sarah exhaled—a long, weary breath, heavy with trust hard-earned. “Then go,” she said quietly. “But bring my son home.”
Abraham nodded, his throat too tight to answer.
Isaac was stacking tools when Abraham found him.
“Be ready before sunrise,” Abraham said. “We’re going to Mount Moriah.”
Isaac raised an eyebrow. “That far? Is this one of those trips meant to build character—or punish it?”
A faint smile tugged at Abraham’s lips. “Perhaps both.”
“And we’re bringing wood?” Isaac asked, glancing at the stack.
“Yes.”
Isaac chuckled. “Good. Last time we forgot it, and Uncle Lot has reminded me ever since.”
Abraham almost laughed. The sound caught in his chest and dissolved into a sigh.
They left while the world was still dark. Two servants walked ahead, leaving father and son alone with the rhythm of hooves and the weight of unspoken thoughts.
After a long silence, Isaac spoke. “Father… why would God ask for a sacrifice now?”
Abraham’s hands tightened on the reins. “Sometimes God tests the ones He loves.”
Isaac nodded slowly. “Well,” he said softly, “if this is a test, I hope you’ve been studying.”
Abraham glanced at him. “I’ve been studying my whole life.”
“Good,” Isaac replied. “Because I’m still learning.”
Abraham felt his chest ache.
On the third day, the mountain rose before them—dark, imposing, unavoidable.
Isaac squinted upward. “That’s… higher than I expected.”
“Yes.”
“And we’re walking all the way?”
“Yes.”
Abraham placed the wood across Isaac’s shoulders, his hands lingering longer than necessary.
“This wood could get heavy,” Isaac sighed.
Abraham picked up the knife. Its weight felt unbearable.
As they climbed, Isaac slowed. “Father,” he said carefully, “we have the fire. We have the wood.” He glanced behind them. “But unless the lamb is planning to meet us at the top, something is missing.”
Abraham’s voice trembled. “God will provide.”
Isaac studied his father’s face. “He always does,” he said quietly. “I just thought He might do it sooner.”
At the summit, Abraham built the altar, each stone placed as if it cost him something. When he turned, Isaac finally understood.
“Father?” Isaac’s voice wavered. “You’re being very quiet. That usually means something is wrong.”
Abraham bound him, hands shaking, tears falling freely. The wood pressed into Isaac’s back. The sky above them was unbearably blue.
Abraham stepped back, every instinct screaming for him to run, to tear the altar apart, to gather his son and flee the mountain. Instead, he lifted the knife. Its weight felt monstrous, as though it carried the grief of generations yet unborn.
“Dad,” Isaac whispered, “you do remember I’m the promise, right?”
“I remember."
“And killing the promise seems… counterproductive.”
Abraham’s voice broke. “God is faithful—even when I don’t understand Him.”
Isaac swallowed hard, then closed his eyes. “Then I trust Him.” He opened them again, meeting his father’s gaze. “And I trust you.”
Abraham’s arm rose.
His heart shattered.
“ABRAHAM!”
The voice thundered from heaven.
Abraham froze, the knife trembling in his grasp.
“DO NOT LAY A HAND ON THE BOY.”
Behind them, a ram struggled—caught fast in a thicket.
Abraham untied his son and crushed him to his chest, weeping with relief.
Isaac sucked in a breath, “God, thank you. Right on time, You provided.”
Atonement bleeds through every moment of this story.
A substitute is provided.
An innocent life is spared.
A beloved son carries the wood to the place of sacrifice.
On Mount Moriah, God paints a prophetic picture—one that points forward to the day when no ram would be needed because God Himself would offer His only Son for the atonement of us all.

That line
helps me to understand how Isaac could have coped with such a traumatic situation and continue to love and live to fulfill his purpose for God’s people.
And yes how beautifully prophetic and beautifully retold.
Congratulations on your first place win in EC. Such a moving story and I felt like I was at Mt. Moriah with Abraham and Isaac.
