The Bible tells us that Jesus is “The Word” and the “cornerstone” upon which the Church was built. The “Church” referring not to a building, but to the collective body of redeemed people who have faith in Jesus Christ. It is the spiritual body of Christ, a family of God’s children, and a bride to her Bridegroom.
Everyone who has been grafted into the “Church” has been “born again”; the moment when that spark of faith draws the sinner to Christ and gives them the ability to believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He died in their place as the sacrifice for their own personal sin. This belief, a gift from God himself (Eph.2:8), is that point in time when we are, spiritually speaking, transformed from our old sin condition into a new creature in Christ; a new birth into the family of God. And there, the journey begins.
If the seed was planted in fertile ground, the new believer will be open to the Spirit’s teaching and leading and will grow up in Christ, gaining a greater and greater understanding of God as time goes on, allowing Him to mold us and shape us into someone who resembles Himself and can be used by Him for His glory and His Kingdom.
We all know that while this may be the way it’s drawn up in the playbook, it doesn’t always work in such an efficient manner. Sometimes, people get stuck in “baby mode” and have trouble moving on from the “milk” of the Word, when we should be advancing to feasting on the “meat” of the Word.
James 1:5-8 is helpful in understanding how to move along in the Christian life; How to find sure footing and a spiritual equilibrium that will protect you from falling:
(My paraphrase) James 1:5:
God: “You want advice? My direction?
Just ask. And then DO what I say, and I
Promise to lead you down right paths.
Strike out in your own wisdom,
Disobedience, pride and self-sufficiency,
And don’t expect that things are going to work out well for you –
You are on your own.”
The Word of God is trustworthy and is the balance we should be using to steady our own character; to center us in this often-crazy world we live in. Trust gets the ball rolling, faith and dependence on God grow bigger, faster and more powerfully with the exercising of obedience. On the other hand, lack of trust results in rebelliousness and disobedience which results in instability and a dependence on one’s self — he who is “tossed and driven by the wind”.
“Doubting” isn’t so much about intellectual uncertainty, rather, it has to do with divided allegiance. A “double-minded” person is insincere in their claim to trust God, because at the same time they’re wanting to hold on to their worldly resources. They say they have faith, but really, they’re non-committal.
They key question in this passage is this: Are you really putting all your trust in God? Or, does your true loyalty lie with the world and with your own resources? Are you a hearer of the Word only? Or, are you a doer of the Word? Doers put faith into action. Doers dive deep and desire to align themselves with the will and the ways of God despite the world around them that is hostile to that idea. Doers won’t compromise their beliefs in the face of ridicule or danger or loss. Doers are a reflection of God and are the light in this dark world. Doers are the spiritually stable, choosing to build their house on the only sure foundation — the rock of God’s infallible, eternal and trustworthy Word.
