Yet greatly afraid
As diffident but loving souls are,
In the guise
Of an almost-renegade,
There is Peter following from afar.
Now he sits
By the warmth of the fire
Denying the Lord with all his might,
Though he sees
All that transpire
In the dark of that dreadful night.
Hark! as foretold
Hear the rooster crow
His master on trial turns around,
To look with love
And let him know
Without words that mercy abound.
Conviction of sin
Profoundly deep
Pierces the depths of his soul,
Into the night he goes
To bitterly weep,
And Peter will once again be whole.
In Jericho lives
A sinner, rich,
Who grew wealthy at others’ expense.
Thriving in
The tax collector’s niche
His base reputation does make sense.
From the streets
He comes to know
That the great teacher is passing by
“I cannot see him
Down here below “
Hear short-statured Zacchaeus sigh.
There he is now
Come what may
Perched high up on a sycamore tree.
“Zacchaeus, I stay
At your house today
Please come down and receive me!”
Joy transforms
His heart and his face
As he slides down the tree in haste,
Never mind the
Disapproval you trace
In the frowns around of unmasked distaste.
Jesus is dining
At the outcast’s place
There’s Zacchaeus, with Christ, face to face.
“Half of my goods
To the poor, I give;
For the stolen, I restore fourfold in place.”
What better proof
Of a transformative
Work of remarkable, redeeming grace!
