Sometimes I divert from the path I’m on
And revisit a side street I have known.
I’ve been here before, rather often,
Familiar to it I have grown.
I come alone when on this street,
And soak in memories and sorrow.
It’s okay to feel this way today,
Then focus elsewhere tomorrow.
The losses I review are large and small,
All mixed together as in a stew.
The small seem large, the large o’erwhelm,
Until mingling into something new.
I feel each loss sharply once again
As if a cavern has opened wide,
And spread to overtake the space
In which I try to hide.
I walk slowly through the dimness
Absorbing once more my pain,
Always searching for the reasons
And seeking comfort once again.
Losses are expected as life slips by,
Sapping strength as I react.
Some are sudden, jarring, wrenching,
Catastrophic in their full impact.
I simply needed to get away
And once more review grief’s face.
My heart’s been crushed and paused its beats
As I search for breathing space.
This day, the losses I grieve the most
Are when love’s been shared-- then gone,
Like the song inside my aching heart, [1]
The cloak of grief lingers long:
I search for truth with painful eyes
As we continue living side by side.
We sustain our hearts with friendship
While we live The Great Divide.
I know Someone else is with me
Walking gently by my side--
My source of hope and truth,
My guide who lives inside.
Distant music comes my way
I lift my head from thoughts of gloom.
I see a light from far away
And smile as I head toward home.
