“Tom! Where are you?” Gina continued calling as she walked through their newly purchased house.
“Back here, dear.”
Finding him in the back bedroom, she walked up to him, flinging her arms around his middle in a tight squeeze.
“You're all out of breath and your face is flushed,” he said as he pulled back a bit to look at her.
Gina moved from his embrace, taking his hand and tugging on it. “Come with me, I want to show you something!” Her eyes danced with merriment. “Come on!” She tugged harder, when he just stood there looking at her.
“Sorry, honey, you're just so pretty with your face lit up like that, your eyes all aglow and your hair a bit mussed.”
“Well, thanks. Just come on, will you?”
He chuckled and let her lead him through the house, out the door, and through a wide open field waiting to be tilled and planted.
They walked in silence, hands swinging between them in joyful companionship. After several more yards, Gina, squealed in excitement, “Look! Isn't it just perfect?”
“All I see is a dilapidated shed, sweetheart. What on earth is so exciting about this?”
Gina's face fell for a split second. “No, I won't let you take my joy away.” She said. “Come inside.”
They stepped into the building, onto a cobblestone floor, coolness enveloping them. To the right of the door was a battered oak table, worn with time and use.
“Okay, Tom, now turn and look out the door.”
“Oh my goodness! I had no idea....” his voice trailed off in awestruck wonder.
“I know! Isn't it just the most beautiful, peaceful scene you've ever clapped your eyes on? I could bring a chair out here and sit just inside the door and paint that river to my heart's content. Oh! It would be so wonderful to paint in different seasons and times of day.”
“How did I not see it as we were walking up here though?”
“Because the trees block the view. Also, I was intent to get you inside first, and then show you.” She grinned up at him. “Look, the leaves are just starting to turn color. I bet they'll be gorgeous in a week or so.”
“I had wondered about buying this acreage sight unseen, but the house is great and seems to have good bones. I'm looking forward to settling in, giving it our own personal touch. And now this discovery of a river. Wow!”
“Yeah, it's pretty incredible. I'd like to paint it as soon as possible, so we can have it framed and hang it above the fireplace.”
“That would be perfect.”
“Come on! I want to get this shed cleaned up and get my painting supplies set up in here right away!”
“Hold on a minute, there, Twinkle Eyes. I want to make sure it's in good enough condition to store stuff out here, before we do that.” he said, as he started walking around, tapping here and there, looking at this and that. “Well, it seems structurally sound, but I don't know about this doo-”
Crash.
“My goodness, Tom. You just barely touched it!”
“Yeah, but I don't think it will be hard to fix and we'll definitely need to put a lock on it.”
Gina stepped over the fallen door, her gaze on the river, flowing so peacefully. Tom came up behind her, resting his hands on her shoulders, his chin on her head. “You know, Gina Girl, after all we've been through this last little while, with my business falling apart, and you losing your job, I'm so glad God provided the finances for us to purchase this place and that He's given us what we need to get back on our feet. This beautiful river is another indicator of His great love for us. We don't need it to know His love, but He gives us so much, if we just open our eyes to see. I think you'll be able to paint, as you said, to your heart's content, and, maybe, some day, even be able to sell some of your paintings.”
“Even if I don't, I'm grateful for this place, and, being here, with you, my wonderful husband. Most of all, I'm grateful that God is with us and has pulled us through what we thought were ashes.”
