I imagined my life in the future sharing a deep love with someone, that would be etched on our faces as was seen in this painting. A love borne of years of shared experiences; joyful and hard, strengthening the bond of marriage.
As I continued to drink the painting into my soul, I began to write a story in my head, of what I hoped would someday be my life. I had been hoping against hope for so long for my love story to be written with someone special.
The scene I pictured is this:
I’m much older with lines of age gracing my face. My once black hair is a beautiful shade of gray. My arthritic knees barely hold me up as I stand looking out our bedroom window at the sun rising over the mist shrouded fields which my husband had plowed many times over the years on our farm. A doe is grazing with her fawn close by.
“Lovie.” I hear from behind me in a voice weaker than it used to be, but with a deep timbre to it that can still make my heart skip a beat and my knees weaker than they already are. I turn slightly and see my beloved sitting up in bed leaning against the pillows, his spectacles perched on his nose. His silver, wavy hair is a bit mussed, His equally silver beard and mustache shimmer a bit in the soft light coming through the pane glassed window. He’s just as handsome, if not more so, than the day I met him all those years ago. “Come back to bed for a bit, Lovie. It’s cold in here without you.”
“Oh, you!” I exclaim teasingly. “I need to go downstairs and get our breakfast started.”
He looks at me with love in his eyes I’ve never been able to resist and makes me an offer I can’t refuse. “I’ll fix us some brunch later. Come, dear, how about snuggling with me awhile?” He pulls back the covers, his arms open to receive me and I willingly crawl back into bed with him. I sigh as I lean against his chest, his chin resting on my head.
As I snuggle closer, I ask, “What will you make me for brunch?”
“Hmm, let’s see we’ll start with dog biscuits and canned tuna!”
“Oh, yum! I can’t wait.”
We laugh together in a shared camaraderie that has been part of the glue that has cemented our love all these years.
“Seriously, Lovie, I’ll make your favorite French toast, bacon, cooked to a perfection, crispy, just the way you like it, and fresh squeezed orange juice.”
“Mmm.” I say drowsily, as I drift back to sleep.
“Miss? We’ll be closing soon.”
Startled out of my day dream, I say “Oh, is brunch ready? That was quick!”
“What?” The concierge looks at me quizzically, a small frown creasing his forehead.
“Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry. I was so taken in by this picture that I was writing a story about it in my head.” I feel the heat rising in my face as I look at him. Oh my. He’s handsome! I wonder if he’s married.
He smiles. My heart skips a beat. Wow! He’s even more handsome when he smiles. “Ah. You’re not the first one to be so drawn to this painting. It is a true work of art. Uh, listen, I don’t mean to be presumptuous, but how about meeting me for brunch tomorrow at the cafe next door? They have the best French toast and bacon cooked to perfection, nice and crispy. Their fresh squeezed orange juice is really good too.”
I guess he’s single.
I smile and say, “I’d love to, Timothy.”
“How’d you know my name?”
I point at his name tag and laugh.
“Oh, yeah. What’s your name?”
“Leslie.”
“Nice to meet you, Leslie. Will 10:30 work for you?”
“Sure. See you then.” I walk out of the gallery practically floating. Could he be the man I’ve been waiting for?
This is a work of fiction
