The three rabbits were congregated mid-morning at their usual meeting place beneath their favorite giant Oak.
“I think it’s a hawk,” Spinachthief replied, squinting as she looked up.
Carrotbane rolled her eyes. “Oh great. We needed another predator like we needed a hole in our heads.”
“Oh, those crazy hawks can’t get us down here in the trees anyway. Howly-prowly the coyote has been gone since that duck humiliated him, and Night-sight the owl is sleeping now. I’d say we’re pretty safe.” Appledentor dismissed carelessly.
“Well, we should still be cautious,” Spinachthief warned.
“Oh, don’t be a worry-wort. Why don’t we go down to the field and see what tender new plants we can find to munch?” Appledentor put a paw on her tummy suddenly as it rumbled.
Carrotbane tilted her head sideways. “Did your stomach just growl?”
“Well, what can you expect? I’m hungry!”
“OK, let’s go, but be careful! Or YOU might get munched!” Spinachthief warned again.
The three rabbits hopped down the hill from the Oak towards the open field. Soon, they reached the edge of the forest. The bright sun cast sharp shadows from the trees onto the lush green new grass that sprang up from the moist ground. A small creek, sparkling in the sunlight, ran through the field.
Appledentor jumped in delight and ran out into the field.
“Wait! Stop! The hawk!!!” Spinachthief cried, but it was too late.
The Hawk swooped down from behind the treetops and pounced on Appledentor. Appledentor let out an awful scream as the hawk grasped her in its horrible talons. Spinachthief and Carrotbane ran towards her. With one swipe of its wings, the hawk nearly knocked them out.
Hooves beat the earth, coming in their direction. Suddenly, a young deer bounded out of the woods. It struck the hawk off the rabbit with its hoof. Feathers flew as the hawk fell disoriented from its prey.
Appledentor rushed away, joined by her two friends, into the safety of trees. The hawk tried to fly away, but the deer struck it again. Though powerful in the air, the hawk was helpless on the ground. Giving the hawk one final kick, the deer sent the bedraggled hawk rolling into the creek. It floundered for a moment in the shallow water before shaking its head furiously and crawling out onto the other side of the creek, too wet and disheveled to fly.
Satisfied with its work, the deer marched back into the woods. Appledentor hopped up to it.
“Thank you for saving my life, Miss Deer.”
“You’re welcome, little rabbit. That pesky hawk was been causing all kinds of trouble lately.” The deer paused for a moment. “Well, I had better get busy eating. It’s almost time for lunch and I haven’t finished breakfast yet!”
“Lunch? It’s not time for lunch yet. It’s brunch time!”
Spinachthief shook her head. “Why do you even bother distinguishing between breakfast, brunch, lunch, supper and midnight snack? You just eat all the time.”
“You forgot a few: after-lunch-dessert, snack, lupper, pre-supper snack, and after-supper-dessert,” chuckled Appledentor.
“Lupper? What’s that?” Carrotbane asked.
“The meal between lunch and supper, of course!”
Spinachthief and Carrotbane buried their heads in their paws and laughed.
“Well, friends, looks you have your work cut out for you. Have fun!” The deer turned and pranced away from the three rabbits.
“It’s a good thing that deer showed up, or I’d have been that hawk’s dinner!” Appledentor shuddered.
Spinachthief nodded. “Yeah. It kind of reminds me of how Jesus came to earth to save people from the claws of sin when they were helpless.”
“Hey, wait a second; I thought the Bible says sin is like a lion.” Carrotbane interrupted with a smirk.
“Well, it’s not an exact comparison, you smart-aleck. Actually, that would be 1Peter 5:8 KJV. ‘Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.’”
“Too bad we didn’t read that one BEFORE we came to the field,” muttered Carrotbane
Appledentor groaned. “Maybe we should start having Bible study before we go anywhere? Someone always remembers a helpful Scripture AFTER we get into to trouble.”
“Well, King David depended on God’s Word to sustain him in all his difficulties. (Psalms 119:92 KJV) ‘Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction,’” agreed Spinachthief.
“Let’s call it Bible Brunch!” exclaimed Carrotbane and Appledentor.
