When she turned sixteen, she was ready to take her Driver’s Test on her birthday. She had taught herself to drive way before she was old enough. Her confidence made up for what she lacked in skill.
To offset her free spirit, she was, and continues to be a hard worker. It was no surprise when she and her husband bought a small farm. There were horses and sheep, goats, dogs, and a slew of barn cats.
She was adept at maintaining calm in spite of dealing with an occasional snake, or ignoring bats hanging in the barn. She was comfortable with the idea of ‘live and let live’.
She was a great multitasker; often mowing a couple acres of land while cooking for a crowd.
Because she is a very competent cook she is often called upon to supply cookies and other goodies for various events. One special recipe calls for Reece’s Pieces—those delicious little peanut butter-filled candies. She started gathering supplies. The large mixing bowl, measuring cups, soft butter, flour, sugar, and so on soon covered her counter. She went to the little pantry at the top of the basement steps to get the large bag of Reece’s Pieces. But alas, the bag she was sure she had was no where to be found. There was, however, a bag that had been opened, but few of the sweet pieces were left.
Jenny was quite certain she had not eaten them. She had been trying to watch her weight. And even if either of her two young children had known they were there, they could not have reached the shelf. Hmmm.
A couple weeks passed. It was getting colder outside. Jenny glanced out the window and saw snow flurries. Quickly checking the weather forecast, she learned that one to two inches of snow was on the way. She must go to the store, and she would need her boots. She trudged up the stairs to the closet where winter boots, coats, and other gear were kept. As she searched the floor of the closet, something caught her eye. What could that be? She looked closer. There in the back corner was a pile of Reece’s Pieces. How did they ever get from the first floor pantry to the second floor closet? Hmmm.
Before the snow got any deeper she packed the children into the car and headed for the Dollar Store. Besides milk, bread, and another bag of Reece’s Pieces, she bought several mouse traps.
The moral to this story is ‘Live and let live’; unless a sneaky critter decides to build a tasty stash from Jenny’s stash of Reece’s Pieces’.
