If, before a decade has passed by,
Young Ned, who lives across the street,
Were to really catch the world’s eye.
Just a slip of a boy caught between
That awkwardness of an early teen,
Where no one takes you seriously
Yet expect a dignified mien.
He devours lexicons by the hour
While his mates at school are throwing ball
You wouldn’t spot him in a huddle
Jabbering in the study hall.
They say he’s glued to the screen all day
Following every scientific breakthrough
Or staring at stock market deals
That throws all Wall Street in a stew.
A whiz at math, with a memory, sharp,
Particle physics excites his mind,
Eager to glean the latest from
All science journals he can find.
The youngest Senior in his High School
‘Nerdy Ned’ seems not to really care
That sometimes he’s the laughingstock
Or perhaps, he’s just unaware?
But, how proud of him his parents are!
Though they wish he would get out more
Have friend-sleepovers and game nights
Or a sport that he would care for.
You can tell how Tim, his home teacher,
Has been bursting with silent pride
(At Ned’s blue ribbon in State Science Fair)
Tim couldn’t hide it if he tried.
There is no doubt that young Nerdy Ned,
That whiz kid hailing from our street,
Someday soon will dazzle the globe
A genius, the world’s yet to meet.
