Have you ever been reading Scripture and read something that made you stop and say to yourself, “that doesn’t make sense”? Well, you are not alone. I have found many paradoxes in Scripture. “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last…” (Mark 9:35 NIV). Or the Apostle Paul’s declaration, “For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:10 NIV)
To top it off, I heard this recently, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.” (Psalm 116:15 NIV) Now, our family has attended several funerals the past three or four months. ‘Precious’ is not the word that springs to my mind.
I began doing a little research on this truth from God’s Word. If we go back to the Creation story, we find that man is God’s crowning creation, made in the very likeness and image of God Himself. Not only did He put man in charge of the whole world He had just created, but He wanted to walk with man and have fellowship with him. (Genesis 3:8 NIV)
When man failed and disobeyed God’s directions, God could have just stamped out His crowning creation. But He didn’t. He loved us so much, He provided a way to be redeemed—at great expense to Himself. Through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ we can have our sins forgiven and have that renewed relationship with our Creator for eternity.
When I think about all this from God’s perspective, yes, I can understand why the arrival in Heaven of those who have accepted Christ’s sacrifice for sins, would be precious in His sight.
It also explains why losing our life to Christ, actually enables us to find eternal life in Heaven. What a precious reunion that will be.
