For years Goy had wondered at the secrecy surrounding his birth. No family photos posing with aunts and uncles. No hospital bracelet. Not even a baby blanket. Nothing to mark his entrance into this world. Only God knew the mystery of his first days here on earth. His parents finally admitted that he was adopted, but it didn’t bring him any peace.
Today was no different. He got up, went to work and did everything according to the books, but there was still that sense that his life wasn’t right.
Shoving the keys into the ignition, he slammed the car into reverse. At the first traffic light, the phone rang. “This is the Grecian Adoption agency. We researched the information you sent us, but we are unable to locate your birth parents.”
“But it was an open adoption. How hard can it be to find them?”
“Well, you are not a member of the Agency of Bodies which regulates adoptions. Therefore, your records are unavailable.”
“Is there nothing else you can do? Your website promised help.”
“Yes, that guarantee is only for those registered in the system. You have to read the fine print.”
"Fine, bye.” Goy punched the steering wheel. He turned onto the next street to get away from the traffic but smashed the brakes. A dead end. Wherever he turned.
The phone buzzed again. Why is my boss calling gme?
“I’m sorry, Goy. I know you were promised the promotion, but it’s just not viable for the company.”
“But I need that promotion to pay for my daughter’s tuition. How in the world am I going to afford it now?”
“I don’t know what to tell you, but we can’t commit to anything right now.”
He hung his head. Every single day, for what seemed like ages, one assurance after another had been broken. First, his family told him they were not his real family. Now, his hope for the future had also crumbled.
Turning into his driveway, the engine light came on and the car sputtered to a stop. Great!
He shoved his keys into his pocket and went to the mailbox. Bills, bills and more…wait, what is this? Another bill or something worse?
Goy shuffled to the house while opening a long envelope. A promissory note?
He rubbed his eyes and analyzed it. A check for millions was made out to him from the Emun company. All he had to do was claim it. This astonishing amount is for me? Somehow he started to believe it.
He called his wife and shared the good news.
“How could that be true? Wait, do you think this means that the family you’ve been looking for are actually the Jacobsons everyone talks about?”
“It’s possible, but I haven’t heard anything. I believe I will, though.”
“I hope so. I know how much it would mean to you. I’ll talk to you later, my love.”
“Yes, love you.”
While ending the call, the phone rang. “Hello?”
“Abe Jacobson, here. Goy, I assume that you have received the letter mailed to you.” He hesitated, “ But are probably wondering how you could have inherited that much money.
“Yes, I can’t understand it, but I believe it.”
“They’ll be an announcement soon, but thirty-three years ago my grandfather Abraham Jacobson believed in a young man named Isaac Emun and invested in his company. Today that company’s worth is pretty much boundless.”
“But what does that have to do with me? I don’t own any shares in that company.”
“To tell you the truth, before he invested, he fathered a child out of wedlock. Our whole family knew, but we couldn’t find him…that son is you.”
“That means you’re my brother?”
“Yes, I’m sorry it took so long to figure it out. You see your information wasn’t in the right place, but we collected a body of evidence to show you belong in this family.”
“I don’t quite know what to say. It sounds like you have been trying hard to find me.” He cleared his throat, “Is it possible that you have a baby picture of me? I’ve never seen one and would really like to.”
”Actually, the church where you were baptized just posted a picture of you. They knew the mystery of your lineage but waited to reveal it until all the proper authorities were notified. They have permission to let the world know who you are. Welcome to the family, Goy.”
