“It was spelling test day,” Timmy replied despondently, plopping down on the couch.
“How did you do?”
“Seventy-eight.”
“Oh dear, what words did you miss?”
Well, I slaughtered one of the vocalberry words and its meaning, so that cost me a lot, for starters.”
“Vocabulary?” Mom asked, moving towards the couch. Timmy nodded.
“What was the word?”
“Mavus, Marlo, I don’t know. That’s why I missed it.”
Mom covered her face with her hand and sat down next to Timmy. How would little Timmy ever learn to spell when he did not remember anything about the words he was supposed to learn?
“What did it mean?”
“Great? Big? I don’t know that either. That’s why I missed it so bad.”
“Marvelous?”
“Maybe. That sounds right. What is it? I never understand those dictery what-ever-they’re-called.”
“Dictionary Definitions? They are pretty abstract sometimes.”
“What is Maverlmouse?”
“Marvelous. Well, it comes from marvel, like something worth marveling over. What is something that you think is really cool?”
“Emperor Penguins!” Timmy exclaimed, brightening up a little.
Mom chuckled, “Well, then, who made the Emperor Penguins?”
“God?”
“Yes, Timmy, that’s right. Now wouldn’t you think that to make something so cool, God would have to be even bigger and greater than that?”
“I suppose so.”
“God made all the animals from the birds that fly in the sky and the fish in the rivers to the platypus and the raccoons that baffle the classification system. More importantly, He made you. He knew everything about you —the color of your eyes and hair, the way you smile, just how much you hate spelling— everything, before you were even born. But before you were born, long ago, Adam and Eve allowed sin to enter the world. Since then, everyone is born with a sin nature. God wants to have a relationship with us, but He cannot tolerate sin. So He sent His perfect, sinless Son Jesus to die for us so He could wash away our sins. Do you know what God requires for us to be perfect?”
Timmy shook his head.
“You have to be perfect and never do anything wrong…”
“Like not paying attention in spelling class?”
“Timmy, and you wonder why you make bad grades on the spelling test?”
“That’s why I missed it.”
“Perfection, or your spelling test?” Mom’s hands had risen to her hips.
“Spelling is so boring. I don’t see the point.”
Mom just shook her head. “Well, the truth is, we all make mistakes. We all fall short of perfection, but Jesus didn't. Jesus offers to erase our sins from heaven’s report card and make us righteous in God’s eyes.”
“Really? Can He erase my bad spelling grade off my report card at school? That would be great!”
Mom stuttered. “Uh… bu… Well I suppose He could, but Timmy, maybe you should ask Him to help you learn your spelling better so you can do better on the test.”
“I guess that would be good. But does He really have time to help me with my spelling? Isn’t He busy making Emperor Penguins or something?”
“Timmy, God is Omnipotent, that means He is all powerful. He can do anything and everything.”
“Would He really want to help me? I’m nothing special.”
“Oh, but to God you are very special. He loves you so much He died for you. He wants to help you and love you like a Father. He loves you very much.”
“So He is all-powerful, perfect, and loving at the same time? Wow, that’s pretty…”
“Marvelous?”
“Yeah! So God is marvelous.”
“Don’t write that on your spelling test or you will still miss it, but yes. God is marvelously powerful, marvelously perfect, and yet He is also marvelously kind and loving towards us.”
“Marvelous.”
