How had she gotten herself married to this wicked man anyway, Abigail wondered. Nabal, her husband, was hated by everyone. The servants dreaded him, the neighbors hated him, and no one dared speak to him for he was such a nasty person. Meanwhile, she was condemned to be his wife, till death do them part.
Abigail shook herself. This was no time to feel sorry for herself. Something had to be done. Her servants stood before her, having just rushed in with the news of General David’s furry.
“Go at once and saddle the beasts of burden. Load them with provisions for David’s men. Perhaps we may appease him,” Abigail ordered.
“Yes, ma’am. Will not Nabal be angry?” the servant bowed.
“Nabal is drunk. If left to his devices, we will all be slain before the next sunrise.”
The servant bowed again and departed to do as the mistress had bidden him.
Abigail looked out the window. All around, she saw the result of her husband’s wickedness. They had money and flocks enough —sheep that David and his army had help protect— but the place was run down. The servants seemed to be disappearing faster than they could find new ones. Runaways were they? Perhaps. Whatever the case, they kept losing their workers. Things always got along better when David and his rouge army were around.
Now Nabal had had the audacity to snub the anointed future king of Israel, a loyal friend of theirs, calling him a runaway slave. She looked down and wiped her hands on her cloke. Somehow, she must try to cool David’s wrath. She turned around as she heard footsteps approaching the door. The door creaked open.
“The Donkeys are loaded as you commanded.”
She glanced up at the servant and then looked away. “Good. Send them on ahead. I will follow.”
The servant bowed and departed. Abigail turned back and brushed her hair back with her hand. What a mess it was. She hastily swept it back into order and put on her best veil. Adorning herself with ornaments, she started towards the door. She stopped. No, she would not go as a richly adorned mistress, but humbly as a servant.
At last, she left the house and mounted the beast saddled for her. With a sigh, she looked back at the house. She prayed she would be successful. Snapping her head back, she urged the donkey forward. There was no time to waste.
Dust settled in the distance as she grew nearer the company of her servants where they had met David’s company. She descended from the hill to meet them. David himself stood there, eyes flaming with furry. Her heart raced as she slid off her donkey and fell on her face before David. Words tumbled out as she pled for his mercy. Surely, God would establish David; why should he trouble himself to needlessly slaughter this mere nuisance of a man and all that he had? She had brought a peace offering to sustain David and his men. God Himself would deal with the wicked enemies of David.
The fire went out of David’s eyes as he listened. She was right. How narrowly he had come to foolishly destroying the guilty and innocent alike. Blessing her, he took the gifts and turned back from his warpath.
Abigail also returned. She found her husband feasting like a king, reveling in his drunkenness. She did not speak to him. She waited until the morning when he had sobered up. Then she told him. Stunned, his heart failed him and he lay still as a stone. Ten days went by, but he did not recover; he died.
Having nowhere else to turn, Abigail, now a widow, sent messengers to David with the news. The message returned. David had asked to marry her! At once, she went to him and became his wife. Truly, she was blessed for the peace she had brought with her wisdom.
Years went by, and David became the king of Israel. Abigail the peacemaker became the bride of the king.
