“What can I do for you?” Dave inquired as he tried to recall if he knew the tired-looking gentleman standing before him.
“I want to make arrangements for my funeral. My wife died several years ago, and I’m not getting any younger.”
“Certainly.” Dave led the man to his office and offered him a chair. “You are…?”
“Will. Will Talbot.”
As he gathered information for Will’s file, Dave came to the question, “Do you have children?”
Dave straightened things on his desk as the elderly man struggled to answer. “I have a daughter, but we didn’t get along very well after she got in high school. She moved out as soon as she graduated. I haven’t heard from Mary Sue since her mother died. I don’t even know where she is.”
Dave thought of his own daughters, and his heart ached for Will. “Would you like for me to try to find her?”
Dave was moved by the tears forming in Will’s eyes. “If you think you can, I would like to see her once more before I die. I hope she’s happy.”
With the help of the internet and a couple of phone calls, Dave was able to locate Mary Sue. She had moved just across the state line. And, yes, she was willing to make contact with her Dad.
A couple weeks later, Dave answered the doorbell again. This time he was greeted by Will, looking ten years younger, clutching something in his hand.
Dave stepped aside for Will to come in, then grinned as Will excitedly shared, “I don’t know how you did it, but Mary Sue called. She is married and has two children. She sent me some pictures.” Dave had never seen a prouder grandpa. “And, she invited me to come to her house for Thanksgiving Dinner!”
Time passed, the snow melted, and the tulips and daffodils were in full bloom. Dave had been gazing out the office window when he saw a car pull into the parking lot. He couldn’t help but smile when he saw Will’s happy countenance. “You probably won’t get my funeral after all,” Will offered. “A small apartment is available on Mary Sue’s street, and she wants me to move there. I just want to thank you again for finding her.”
Dave usually felt down and disappointed when he lost a funeral. But as he watched Will get in his car and drive out of the parking lot, he felt joy and an indescribable sense of peace, thankful that he had had a part in restoring a broken relationship.
