I can't go on like this.
The pain is unbearable.
Are you sure you want to die?
It may be more painful.
Yes, I need an end to this constant misery.
Take my life.
It is time, then, to die.
Give me your heart, all of it.
Let me make of you what I will.
You won't regret this.
It will be a painful process.
The end result will be joy.
A life worth living.
I handed my heart
To the Man in shimmering white whom
I knew would be merciful to me,
A sinner.
Melissa woke with a start, tangled up in the bed sheets, heart pounding. It wasn't a scary dream, but it certainly was intense. Did she really want to die to self? Did she want the excruciating pain she knew might come with it? There were areas of her life she knew she had died to, but not all. She knew God was merciful and would walk with her through the process.
She thought of the conversation she'd had with her friend, Clara about this the other day. She had said, “The pain of dying to self, is, at times, excruciating. But, Melissa, there has been immense joy in it, as I'm restored to Jesus; my old life stripped away, a new life in it's place. Every time I make the decision to die to self, it's the best decision I can make.”
No wonder she'd had the dream, as she was thinking about this and a song she remembered from the 1970's when she went to sleep the night before. The song was Water Grave by The Imperials. It talked about dying to self as being a mercy killing, and that in order to live spiritually, there has to be a death.
Mercy killing – what a way to look at dying to self. A merciful act, so that life could be hers to the full, as was promised in John 10:10. Melissa was weary of having the thief of her soul steal so much from her. She wanted the promise of this verse.
Lord, please make me willing to die to self, and to have this mercy killing so that I can walk in true joy with you. Amen.
A tear slid down her cheek, as her soul rejoiced, knowing that she had just been extended mercy from God who loved her so.
