On one occasion words spoken to me caused me to never again wear the dress I was wearing for picture day. My thirteen year old self loved that dress, a dress handed down to me from a family of girls whom had beautiful clothes. Whenever they gave me a box of clothes, I was in Christmas heaven! Such fun I had looking through them all, trying them on and then wearing them to school, church or family gatherings.
The old adage, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” are untrue. Words do hurt, they insult and wound for years to come, if we let them, and unfortunately, I have let them.
What would I tell that young girl who was me, had she come to me with what was said to her? I imagine the conversation might have gone like this:
“Don't let these words stay with you, haunting you, injuring you, continually insulting you. Forgive those girls who spoke the way they did you, pray for them. Be kind to them, even though they were unkind to you.”
“But that's hard! They hurt me!”
“I know, but if you hang on to the hurt, you will have more pain than if you let go; forgiving and moving on in the grace Christ has shown to you. You can extend His grace to those girls and your heart will be better for it. Ask Jesus to help you, and He will.”
Now, I choose to let the words go, to forgive those who spoke them, setting myself free from insult and injury, offering grace, and hopefully never speak of them again, as I ask Jesus to help me.
