“OK, OK. Don't get your tail in a knot, Gil, I'll be ready.”
Fifteen year old Ginny went back to carefully applying makeup. This was her first 'date' and she wanted to look just right.
The twins had planned this double date and worked out all the details with their dad to go pick their dates up and then come back and get her so it'd be more like a real date.
When they got to the high school Gil and Harvey walked up to the ticket booth to get their tickets to the basketball game.
“Ginny, your brother is so cute! I can't believe he asked me out!”
“I think he really likes you, Stella. I'm not so sure about Harvey. I'm not exactly sure why I said yes to going out with him.”
“Give him a chance, Gin, maybe he won't be so bad.”
“Maybe...”
“OK, girls you ready to go in?” Gil said as he and Harvey sauntered up to them.
“Sure!” the girls said in unison.
The four made their way into the noisy, crowded gym looking for seats. Soon they were seated. “You look real nice tonight, Ginny!” Harvey shouted.
“You don't need to shout, Harvey, I can hear you just fine.”
Harvey's face turned bright red. “Oh, I'm sorry.” he mumbled.
“Oh, Harvey, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to embarrass you. Let's enjoy the game.”
“Yeah, OK.”
They settled back to watch the game. There was a lot of whooping and hollering when their team made the final basket and won the game by two points.
“Wow that was an exciting game, huh Ginny?” Harvey asked as they walked with Gil and Stella out of the high school and made their way to the local ice cream parlor.
“It sure was! I couldn't believe how close it was, and when Mike made that final basket, wow!”
They continued chatting as they strolled along, then as they got closer, Harvey said, “Hey Gil, how about you and Stella go that way, and me and Ginny will go this way?” He pointed to the left.
Ginny couldn't believe her ears. She didn't want to be alone with Harvey!
“No, we need to stick together.” Gil was saying.
Inwardly Ginny breathed a sigh of relief.
When they reached the ice cream parlor they ordered and then sat at a table where some of their friends were already enjoying sweet treats. They all bantered back and forth, joking with one another and talking about the game.
Once they were home for the night, Ginny took Gil aside and gave him a hug. “Aw, sis, what's that for?”
“Thank you so much for what you did for me tonight. I'll never forget it!”
“It was nothin'.”
“Oh, yes it was. You made me feel so loved and protected by what you did. I really can't thank you enough.”
“Well, OK, then, you're welcome. I have to watch after my twin sis, don't I?”
“Yeah, I guess you do.” Ginny said as she hugged him again.
“Sheesh sis, knock it off....”
“Nope never. Goodnight Gil. Sleep well.”
“Gnight Gin. You too.”
Ginny went into her room, shut the door and got ready for bed. She wasn't thinking of her date with Harvey, but about how her brother took a protective stance. He would forever be a hero in her eyes for that act of chivalry.
