Wait, what? Why am I waking up in the sand? Where am I?
As I become more awake, I take in my surroundings and see that everything I had built in my life lays in a heap around me.
My career is being pecked at by sea birds; sand dollars washed ashore by the waves.
My mansion is a pile of rubble, my treasured Mercedes Benz atop it all, mangled beyond recognition.
As I look around some more, to my astonishment, I see a small cottage untouched by the rains and flooding that must have come in the middle of the night.
How can this be?
I look closer and see that the pristine cottage with its bounteous rose gardens stands solidly on a huge boulder.
I get up, brushing sand from my pants, pondering the situation.
Suddenly I'm in a Sunday School room at the age of 15. Bored out of my mind, I doodle on the notepad my mom always insists I take with me.
What is the teacher rambling on about now? Something having to do with building your house on sand or on rock. Blah, blah, blah.
I look down at the notepad. My eyes widen. I have sketched a stormy sky with a torrent of rain pounding the earth; a house on the sand smashed to smithereens, next to it, a house on solid rock.
As I consider the drawing, just like that, I'm back on the sand. It dawns on me, my life has been built foolishly. I have gone my own way for years, not listening to anyone, but doing only what I wanted to do. My heart ignored the teachings of Jesus.
I realize then that the cottage on the boulder must have been built by someone who did just the opposite of me.
The storm came in the night, battering us, my life falling with a crash, while the cottage, much smaller than my mansion, held fast.
I fall to the ground, sobbing.
Oh, God, what have I done?
I wake with a start, rub my eyes, and look around. I'm in bed in my large suite of rooms, with a view overlooking the ocean.
What a dream!
My heart pounds with the reality of it.
Falling to my knees, I pray, first asking God to change my heart and make me into who He intended me to be in the first place.
What day is it?
Realizing it's Sunday, and early enough to get ready to attend a church service, I do so.
When I walk through the doors of the building I hadn't been to in more than a decade, a feeling of peace settles on me, enveloping me in a warmth I haven't felt in a long time.
Welcome Home, My child, welcome Home.
I look up and smile, assured that all is forgiven and that the heart change has begun.
