“No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” (Luke 5:33–36 & Matthew 9:16–17, NIV).
One day the Pharisees approached
Emmanuel, our King.
They asked why John’s disciples fast,
but His go on eating.
“They eat, they drink, and do not fast—
why do they do these things?”
With wisdom, Jesus answered them
and spoke of a wedding.
“Can you effectively enforce
a bridegroom’s friends to fast,
and can you make their time with him
go on and ever last?
“There’ll come a time when he must leave—
depart—he’ll go away.
He will no longer be with them—
no longer will he stay.”
Then Jesus told a parable—
a story He did tell,
of wineskins and a garment patch,
and why some skins might swell.
“No one should sew an unshrunk patch
on wineskins old—not new,
as it will pull apart and tear—
the wine will then run through.
So. . .
“Be sure to pour new wine into
new skins and not the old.
It’s then that both will be preserved”. . .
Christ’s story was twofold.
