He saw me very casually for only a few months, yet he kept announcing his almost uncontrollable passionate love for me.
Hmmmm
I was not in the mood. I was busily mired in myself and my personal issues.
But he had paid the hairdresser to knock herself out making me glorious.
I accepted the invite to a very posh restaurant when he asked my sister and a couple of dear friends to accompany us. Beautiful atmosphere, overlooking the river. Going into shock viewing the menu choices and prices, my sis and I both looked at my overly pleased escort who had begun a campaign to have us both go with him to dinners and movies, strictly as companions.
I, being very definitely not interested in finding someone to romance with, agreed to keep him company on his adventures, understanding his loneliness, being a widower. We were friends of his mother, with whom he resided - and he appeared "safe."
He pushed my sister's wheelchair, using it as his walker - with her holding his oxygen on her lap. I trundled along in my power chair, seeing movies and having great times together. We are older folk, and it was cool.
He started saying "I want to make the rest of your life the best of your life." Now, I am not the brightest bulb in the chandelier. He knew how to charm, and I didn't realize how vulnerable I was to being charmed.
So here I am, dense and highly pampered by the beautician - thinking how nice it was to be spoiled. Looking forward to dinner with friends who immediately snapped our picture when I joined them with my hair ala elegant (every hair in place), looking like a box of Valentine chocolates.
A wonderful dinner guiltily consumed - calories as well as cost - and anticipating the exquisite dessert. Surprised by the tiny sliver of cake we were to share.
My admirer suddenly turned to me and asked me to back up my power chair. He slid forward in his chair - and I, being the worried mother to all comers, was afraid he was about to get out of his chair - his physical strength was such it could have become a disaster. I almost physically restrained him, trying to prevent his falling, pleaded "no, no - stop, please stop, do not do this."
After a few awkward moments, he looked at our friends across the table, looked at my sister sitting beside me and finally stared my way. With halting manner, he softly croaked "will you marry me?"
