Pulling my woolen scarf
Closer ‘round my neck,
I walked boldly out the door
And launched my daily trek.
The crisp gentle air
Enveloped my face,
Inviting my steps
To pick up the pace.
I walked along briskly
As I saw fading leaves
Settling into piles
Displaced from their trees.
The wind lifted them
Carried them far down the road,
Coloring the asphalt
Orange, yellow and gold.
I spied two squirrels
Hastening about,
Preparing food for winter
As their fur thickened out.
Winter was approaching
For both fall-- and for me.
Barrenness awaited us
Inevitably?
I paused on the path
Unaware I had done so,
Sat on a nearby bench,
Wanting freedom to let go.
I traveled miles and decades
Remembering the past,
Reviewing mistakes and sins I now own,
Puzzle pieces fitting together at last.
In fact, I’d say winter’s threat
Is no longer dreaded,
The briskness of mind
Solving what I’ve regretted.
With freedom that comes
From letting go of the past,
My mind has the quickness
My body now lacks.
I guess it’s okay
To trade youth for old age
As God speaks to my heart
To give up baggage.
I resume my journey
Much lighter in heart.
The walk for today
Gave me a new start.
