Her husband had been the apple of her eye, the delight of her heart. Memories came as if on gossamer wings. His smile that lit up the room, his gentle teasing, his love for her, so deep and true. He'd gone home to heaven so many years ago, and yet today, she missed him as if it happened just yesterday. The ache in her heart, as she tried to remember, was that strong.
As she continued rocking, she prayed, “Lord, please grant to me a memory from our special day. I only need one.” Looking down at the handkerchief in her hand, her eyes lit up and as sure as the dawn, a memory came, filling her mind with the brilliance of it, the colors of that golden autumn day alive in her mind's eye. She remembered her maid of honor pinning that hankie to the slip under her wedding gown. Her grandmother had given it to her that day, so she would have something old.
Another memory came of standing at the altar with her beloved, as they gazed with love at one another, whispering to each other, while a song was sung. Oh, how handsome her husband was in his tuxedo, his eyes speaking volumes of love.
As she continued rocking, her eyes drifted shut, and she saw again the golden autumn day as they took pictures after the ceremony, at a lake nearby, where leaves carpeted the grass, the wind picking up, causing colorful leaves to swirl down all around them. She wondered where the photograph was, that captured the look of pure delight on their faces, as joy danced around them, as if celebrating their love with them.
Memories came, then, of their life together, so precious, so cherished. She held them close to her heart, and whispered a prayer, “Lord, thank you for the gift you gave me, in my husband, and thank you that while he was the apple of my eye, that I, as your child am even more so, the apple of your eye, and you hold me close to your heart as you remember and know all the days of my life set out in a beautiful panorama before you. Someday when I come home, you will have so much to share with me of my life here on earth.”
