I saw you and your friends at midday today. Perhaps you saw me. I was at Jacob's Well, speaking to Jesus, when His men came up to us. Please, dear lady. Will you listen to my story?
I waited until noon today; to draw water from the well, as not even the women of my people will fellowship with me. A man I now know to be called Jesus came to the well and asked me for water. I was astonished. After all, He is a Jewish man.
Yet, He spoke to me as if we were equals. He acted as if the conflict between our lands did not exist. I feel as if He knew my whole life, although we spoke only briefly. Let me tell you my story. I began begging as a young child. My parents abandoned me, and I was begging in the streets until I was old enough for something else of mine to be valuable. From that day on, love has been my currency.
And yet, without any words of love, Jesus showed me a more profound love than I've ever known. I told Him I believe He is the Messiah: The One we have waited for. And he agreed: He is That One!
After He left, I felt compelled to testify of Him to my people. I could not hold my tongue. I knocked on every door in my village and told everyone who would listen that Jesus is the Messiah.
As I ran through the town, I was fortunate not to meet any of the men. The men must have been out in the fields or at their crafts. That was good – because I don't know how to talk to men unless I am plying my trade. I can't be comfortable doing business in the marketplace with a man unless I coyly smile and imply an indecent assignation.
Kind lady, I don't know how to live any other way. All I know how to do is offer my counterfeit love and persuade men to care for me. Yet, now, I believe I must no longer do that. Josiah – the man I was living with – wants nothing to do with me now. I know the Love Jesus offers is far different than any I have ever known. I also know I must now live by it.
As I ran through Samaria today, many women shut their doors when they saw me. But many who listened were persuaded that Jesus is indeed the Messiah. Those who believed ran out to find their husbands, to tell them. I later heard many men have also decided to follow Jesus.
I'm still trying to figure out what to do next. So, I asked God for direction. A few moments later, I recalled seeing you and the other ladies preparing food for Jesus' men in this field. It occurred to me that I could be one of you and serve Jesus as you do.
Please, my lady: I know my story tells of a life not worthy of following Him, but I believe that His Love has transformed me. Please allow me to serve as one of you. I am ready for God's adventure!
What's that? Yes, dear lady- I know where Magdala is. Why do you ask? Do you want me to listen to your story? Yes, I will listen, Mary.
