“What does it say?” He queried as he saw me approaching waving the letter.
We both sat down as my fingers nervously began opening the envelope. We read together, “Congratulations—You have been assigned a baby girl, 2 months old.”
We looked up from the letter and stared at each other before I blurted out, “A baby!” We had been willing to accept a child up to four years old, so we were sure our new daughter would be older.
“I can hardly wait for the girls to get home from school and hear that they will have a baby sister!”
Paper work continued to flow back and forth for five months. Our hearts longed to have her in our arms and our home. The diaper bag was packed and sitting by the door for several weeks, while we waited for the phone call giving us details for her arrival.
At last the call came, the day arrived, and we headed off to the airport to be united with our new daughter and sister. The older girls talked to her, and took turns holding her, but their new sister didn’t laugh or giggle. Furthermore, she was inclined to turn her head and cling to me.
The whole family worked at making Sara Lyn feel secure and loved. There were lots of snuggles and plenty of food available at the slightest sign she may be hungry. Yet we could not get a picture with a smile. Did she suffer from some emotional trauma? Would she need psychological therapy? We longed to see her exhibit joy and happiness.
Several weeks went by and our third daughter’s birthday was coming up. Kerry excitedly chose her Birthday Meal and special cake. The day of the birthday celebration arrived. I sat Sara Lyn close to the table for a front row seat. The candles were lit and the girls sang with gusto. As we finished singing, Kerry took a deep breath and blew out the candles.
Whoa…what was that sound? All eyes darted to our baby girl as she exhibited uninhibited belly laugh giggles. The candles were relit several times as we got priceless photos of our little daughter expressing her enjoyment at a traditional family celebration.
King Solomon, in his wisdom, wrote a proverb stating, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine…” (Proverbs 17:22 KJV). Those belly laugh giggles surely brought healing to our baby daughter. But in addition, her merry heart was also good medicine for me!
