The visits from Pastor Steve and Mariness helped strengthen her soul, but she had no way to contact either Christian friend to inform them that she was expecting. She dreaded telling Eecuddas. Their agreement that offspring would learn about both Christianity and the Curish religion had become all to real, and troubled her soul.
Lori needed someone to talk to, so she swam to the beach with the sole purpose of finding someone who could get ahold of Mariness. She took a deep gillful of water as she strode out onto the sand. The first humans she saw were bent over their phones and discussing a comic book movie. They were shocked when she said, “Excuse me,” while water was leaking from her gills. The one on her left squealed to her companion, “See, I told you that there’s people who can live in the sea, but noooooo, because it was my sister who told me, you didn;t believe me.”
Her companion ignored her and asked, “Do you need help, miss?”
Lori sighed from deep in her soul, which caused more precious water to run out of her gills. “Yes. Can you find a way to contact the superhero Mariness and ask her to visit Lori? She’ll know what that means.”
They assured her that they would try, but not before the girl asked for a selfie with her, “Just so Mariness will believe us.”
Lori suspected that wasn’t the sole reason she wanted a picture with her, but agreed and smiled, even after the photo needed to be retaken twice.
After returning home, Lori’s husband accused, “You went into the air. You must tell me why!”
Lori knew she could choose to argue with him, or defuse the situation with a single comment. Choosing the latter, she responded, “I’m pregnant and I wanted someone to get one of my surface friends dow,,,”
The rest of her comment was drowned out by Eecuddas screaming, “We’re going to have a baby?!”
Lori thought to herself, ‘No, genius, I made that up for the sole purpose of stopping you from questioning me.’ Aloud she said, “Yes.”
Eecuddas raced towards the front entrance to their home. “Wait until father hears this!”
As he swam out the door, he nearly collided with Mariness, who had gotten the message from the people on the beach. With her powers, she could breathe as underwater easily as Lori, so she asked, “Where is he going in such a rush?”
Lori responded quietly, “To tell the High Priest that I’m pregnant with his grandbaby.”
Mariness squealed with delight, “That’s wonderful news!”
Lori hung her head, “Not if they plan to corrupt my baby’s soul with their pagan worship.”
Mariness became all no-nonsense. “How can I help? I presume that’s why you asked those guys to get that message to me?”
Lori looked her friend straight in the eye and asked, “Can you get a children’s Bible waterproofed? Maybe bring it here so I don’t have to come to the surface?”
Mariness promised she’d make it her sole purpose to support Lori, as Lori was unequally yoked. “Do you think Eecuddas would have a problem with ‘Aunt Rebecca’ visiting your baby?”
Lori laughed, “All the time we’ve known each other and now you tell me your real identity?”
Rebecca interrupted, “It’s not the sole reason. I don’t want to be ‘Aunt Mariness’, because Rex, Diamond, would never let me live it down.”
Lori smiled while looking out the window for the entourage her father-in-law always had with him. She wasn’t sure what Eesirahp would think about her having another air breather in his son’s home.
Mentioning that to Mariness, Rebecca responded, "Ugh, what a control freak."
At that moment the two mermen swam back into the doorway, Eesirahp looking at Mariness with approval. “Good! A woman needs another woman at this time in her life.”
Lori decided to boldly ask the lone question burning in her soul. “You do realize that due to the verdict, I can and will share my faith with my child?”
Eesirahp bubbled, "Harumph. You do have that right.”
